I went into this book thinking I was going to obtain insight into how the Google founders think and how Google approaches business. I was worried that the author, apparently given inside access and being one who writes professionally depending on this kind of access, would have a compromised objectivity by painting only a rosy picture. Then as I read on, it felt at times like I was reading an advertisement for why one should work at Google and something written to avoid offending the corporate Google and its employees.Even Google mistakes are cast in a positive upbeat light. No real discussion of blunders like the Logitech Google relation with Google TV.Wasn't explicitly looking for the bad....but just looking for something truthful and insightful. Google and its founders success are obvious. They've done great things and the founders and employees have done excellent ground breaking work. And the book is written well in the sense that it's easy to read and conveys information in the form of stories versus more dry treatments. However, it reads only like something a fan would write about their idol...and there are discrete instances where I even cringed at how much of a fanboy book this was. It's unfortunate but a reality that it's hard to obtain inside access to companies in order to write about them and then not write anything but a glowing story. Otherwise...no one else will let you in. Not to mention that it's written about contemporary living powerful people and a corporation...so it would be intimidating to write anything more blunt. It's no wonder that you see books on the likes of Ford and Edison long after their time that are more of an exposure of reality....and we will probably have to wait 50-100 years to hear what really makes Google tick, how the founders think, and how the company works. Which is a shame because it could be helpful to entrepreneurs who really would like to learn from such folks and not just be fed fluff. The real deal, warts and all, the good and bad, will have to wait.

Want free food and dry cleaning, on work-site physicians, masseuses? Go to work for Google, the Net's hottest search engine.Google marked a turning point in civilization as its revolution in technology and computer dynamics evolved into the "world's information". At Google the future is already underway. More than 70% of searches are Google searches in the U.S.But beyond just search this enterprise would remake the energy industry, the medical information infrastructure, the book world, radio, television and communications. All this began by two Montessori kids who evolved questioning authority.Book searches were a Google staple where an estimated 33 million published books became a targeted sanctum.

This book describes the initial growth of Google, and does a good job of describing how the Google culture (kind of like Intel's chip production allocation culture) generally tries to be a data-driven culture that operates by collecting lots of data (eg user queries) and then analyzing the data to determine how to proceed. In this way, the culture de-emphasizes individual human opinions in favor of aggregate statistical results, where they are available. But I have mixed feelings about the book. Much of it reads like so many of the other gooey, sugary fan books of various Silicon Valley companies where stereotypes are emphasized because it makes a "better" story because of the images that are invoked. (eg. It's cool to do all the anti-traditional (dare I say almost juvenile?) things (like scavenger hunts, etc) normally associated with tech start-ups and their people). It seems to me that ever since the late 1970s too many tech-company books have spread the "it's cool to do X" gooey company philosophies around, and this book seems to be no different.I think the strength of the book is the discussion of how search grew up, and the descriptions of the technical / algorithmic solutions and infrastructures that were required to implement the Google that we know today. I found the main weakness of the book to be all the tedious descriptions of how wonderful the corporate anti-traditional culture was, and how special it was (really, how could it be, after 30+ years of engineer - driven tech companies before Google?).I would recommend this book to people who are interested in a layman's-level description of how search grew up, the issues that arose, and the technical / infrastructure solutions that were developed. The scale and technical sophistication of the Google infrastructure (like Amazon and it's AWS infrastructure) just boggles the technical mind, and it is quite interesting to read about it. But I really think the gooey cult stuff was overdone in the book.

What to Expect the Second Year: From 12 to 24 Months (What to Expect (Workman Publishing)), by Heidi Murkoff

From Publishers Weekly

Popular parenting guru Murkoff offers a sequel to her What to Expect in the First Year in this all-inclusive look at the toddler from 12 to 24 months. In 15 chapters the authors cover feeding, sleeping, learning, playing, health and safety, injuries and developmental disorders, discipline, and other issues with a meaty center section on behavior. The text opens with the stunning array of developmental milestones that characterize this action-packed period in a child's life, beginning at 12 to 13 months, when a toddler says two words and cruises from place to place while holding on to furniture, to 24 months when he or she can run, kick a ball, and use 50 words or more. While noting that there's a "wide range of normal," Murkoff also warns parents to "follow your gut" and check with your pediatrician if anything seems behind schedule. Murkoff covers practical matters like the importance of parents learning CPR, frequently citing professional guidelines (i.e., experts advise no TV for kids under two). She also addresses less critical topics, such as how to get a blob of oatmeal out of a toddler's hair or deal with a youngster's "wardrobe monotony." Just as expected, Murkoff offers sound advice and reassurance that will help parent and toddler stay grounded during this whirlwind period of growth and change. (May)

I was quite amazed at all the information that is in this book. Being a grandmother and having ordered this book for my son and his wife for their toddler, I thought it going to be one of those books where the child is coddled and spoiled. I was to wrong!Very good information and some that I didn't even know about. I read it from front to back and was very impressed with the content of the book. For a starting out family with their first child, it is a must have for their bookshelf. They will get good use out of it and help them in forming and bonding with their child. It covers all aspects of the first few years and then some on what to expect and gives suggestions on how to handle it.

It was not the same layout as the "What to expect the first year" book. I wanted something that went month-by-month, this one lumped all the developments into categories such as eating, sleeping, playing, stranger anxiety, tantrums, etc. In the beginning of the book they do a short overview of what to expect during the year by month, but not whole chapters on it. The categories are vague and I am not really sure what parts of them apply to children that are under 18 months, and those that are over 18 months. For this reason, I gave it a 3 star

I was reluctant to purchase this book because I was so set in the month-by-month structure that the prior "What to Expect" books were broken down in, but it's so true that at this point, every baby blossoms differently and goes through things at a different pace. So it is EXTREMELY nice to have everything broken down by topic category instead for super easy reference. I'm not even kidding, I flipped it open to the middle of the book as soon as I got it and BAM! I instantly found an answer to one of the burning questions I've been wondering about. That right there was when I had my epiphany that this book really is exactly what I needed in my life at this point. It's so nice to just flip through and read up on different topics and I still get the same reassurance that I always have gotten out of reading these awesome books. I'm SO GLAD I made the decision to go ahead and buy it!! Even with the internet at our fingertips, there is no comparison to being able to sit down and read through a book full of up to date knowledgeable information, tips and tricks. I kept hearing "Oh you don't need those books" but fortunately I decided to give them a try anyway. I'm so glad I did! They are the best!!

This was a great book that I always found very helpful in alleviating anxiety. Reading about things as normal that you're bothered by from new parent ignorance is really calming and reassuring. My only regret was I was often behind in reading the material relevant to the month of age. I would then get to a key point and think, "man I wish I would have known this a couple months ago!" The only thing that keeps me from giving it a 5 star is that I wish the author would have had more references supporting the assertions.

I started to read Heidi's What to expect when you are expecting. Then religiously read what to expect first year, and this one. From knowing nothing about pregnancy and baby, I learned everything from the series. This is a great baby owner manual! The book gives insights of how to raise a baby on daily basis, also packed with information of what to expect / to watch out. It is also backed up by scientific research data and American pediatricians associations' recommendations. I was able to have sneak peeks of the future and be prepared. Would highly recommend it to all moms and dads.

Do not be fooled! This book is not structured like the First Year, and that's a drawback. Unlike the first year, which you can read month by month, this book is organized thematically. Because I have a toddler (which this book should know!), I don't have the luxury of reading the whole book at once to find out the answers to all problems. It still has great information, but there is so much I don't have time to get to yet. Wish it was the other way.....

I loved the “What to Expect the First Year” so I bought this one and since every kid is different it’s not based out on each month so that kind of makes it a little bit harder of the read in my opinion. It’s broken up into sections like: sleeping, behavior, how to discipline, etc. It’s just harder for me to want to read the whole thing so I find that I do like it it is very informative, however, I kind of use it like a dictionary rather than an actual read for me.

I thought this book contained crucial info, references and helpful guidance that I needed to get through my little one’s second year. It gave me a little peace of mind knowing I had it on hand to reference at any moment if I needed to.Unlike the first year, the second year is organized by categories, not by months old. For example: Sleeping / Feeding / PlayingPositive:I really loved the month to month style (first year), but with this book it was very convenient finding everything I needed to know on that one topic, all in one place. No searching around for it.Negative:I would read a particular topic, suddenly crucial milestones, behaviors, etc. are mentioned that were critical during a specific age range (that may have already passed)Overall, I didn’t like that this book’s layout is different from the first book but I bought it to have as a trusted guide and tried my best to re read topics often to make sure I wasn’t missing things.

I loved the last book (what to expect the first year) but hated this one. It felt much more opinionated. Even things like nursing, sleeping etc. all seemed to have strong biases about what is the “right way” when any parent / family knows all children are different and there is no “one way” to do anything...

Definitely a fun read. Like most of Winston Groom's historical works, it's not aimed at historians or buffs of the period or war in question but at the general reading public and on that level it works very well. Certainly,we get strong portraits of the various personalities and very entertaining descriptions of the battle itself. Scholars and other more serious readers though should probably look elsewhere.Certainly Andrew Jackson was not only the man of the hour but probably the best possible man for the occasion, with a deep seated hatred for the British and remarkable determination. But Jean Laffite seems to have been a far more interesting personality and surprisingly devoted to his new nation, especially so given that the government of Lousianna was spending a lot of time and energy trying to prosecute him just prior to the battle. Not to mention the Britsh commander spent a lot of time and energy to recruit him to their side with a very lucrative offer. Andrew and Jean made a very odd couple indeed and it took some time to convince General Jackson could be trusted or had anything to offer. But the book makes it pretty clear it probably would not have gone our way, much to th e surprise of the US public and the British army without Monsieur Laffite, .Interestingly enough, Winston Groom feels strong emotional ties to the battle as one of his ancestors figured prominently in the outcome. His feelings make this a very personal work for him as he makes clear in the book.

If you read the sample, this is a good example of not judging a book by the sample! I was interested in the Battle of New Orleans after finding some family connections to the campaign. This book was priced low enough that I took a chance... after reading the sample which discussed the authors personal connection to the battle I expected to see a book focused on that aspect rather than a general overview of the campaign. With that said, this was exactly to book I was looking for an I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to understand this battle and the War of 1812 in general and the Battle of New Orleans specifically. It should be noted that the writing is excellent and the author also wrote Forrest Gump and another non-fiction book that was nominated for a Pulitzer.I would recommend that the author extend the sample to include the at least one additional chapter so the sample reader could properly evaluate this book.*Will look harder at the authors other historical non-fiction books.

We took the Steam Boat from New Orleans to Memphis for the Civil War Tour. Being in New Orleans for the first time required taking a tour of the Chalmette Battlefield to be on the site of the greatest American victory overshadowed by the events half a century later in the Civil War. This is the place that restored American esteem after the disastrous defeats of the War of 1812 in the East, save for the defense of Fort McHenry in Baltimore. Our history is being lost, as far as I can tell, in the schools our children and grandchildren are now matriculating through. How to instill in them the grand traditions of our Republic and what it took to create and preserve it is becoming an ever more daunting task. This well written book is worth having available. It wasn't just the final day with the one large attack. What faced Andrew Jackson and how the many smaller battles figured into the tactics and heroism on both sides is well worth knowing and noting.

While exploring various angles on the War of 1812, I came upon Winston Groom's Patriotic Fire." Here was a careful examination (and a bit of extrapolation) on the Battle for New Orleans. The MYRIAD ways this confrontation could have gone the other way were presented in an exciting yet highly informative fashion. The battle sequences were exceptionally vivid and graphic, as befits the era. Getting into the heads of Jackson and Lafitte worked quite well here...Mr. Groom certainly did his homework.

An absorbing historical account of the Battle of New Orleans. A shot by shot account of the battle that literally created the UNITED STATES. Written in such a manner that it was really difficult to put it down. Groom delves into the characters of the time; Their personalities, their loyalties, their strengths and weaknesses the indian war with the Creeks. AndrewJackson, Jean Lafitte, Colonel Hinds, Naval ships USS Carolina, USS Louisiana, USS Enterplrise, and all the important characters of the city of New Orleans. Mr. Groom also goes into personalities of the British army (Generals Keane& Pakenham) and Navy (Admiral Cockburn). A facinating story of the events leading up to the final battle, the pirates, the citizens of New Orleans, and the military of the United States. A truly wonderful read.

My appreciation for Winston Groom's books and writing is already a matter of record. That record remains intact with Patriotic Fire. I knew very little about the War of 1812 and other than good time song "Battle of New Orleans" really didn't have much information about how desperate a war it really was. This is an excellent book, written by an excellent author and really was an inspiration to read and learn more. It even inspired me to buy the 1958 movie with Burt Lancaster as General Jackson and Yul Brynner as Jean Lafitte.

Very well written account of the Battle of New Orleans (War of 1812).Groom breaths life into a very important, yet little know, episode in American history. He gives each of the major participants a well deserved biography and describes each skirmish and battle in great detail. This is a great work and a very enjoyable read.

This is my third Winston Groom book. Probably my favorite. There was not a slow section. Really recreates the personalities and the battles very well. Andrew Jackson, although controversial, is a fascinatingly complex character. This was well described in this book. For an avid history reader, this book was wonderful. We are coming to the bicentennial of the Battle of New Orleans, so this makes this book all the more relevant. Great job by the author. Look forward to more of his titles.
