Spirit Traveler: Unlocking Ancient Mysteries and Secrets of Eight of the World's Great Historic Sites, by Sonja Grace

Review

"This densely-rendered portrait of ancient sacred sites is painted with a combination of science, history, and metaphysical research. From psychically experiencing the raw energy of Stonehenge to watching a high priestess call forth the goddess from the waters of Saint Winefrede’s Well, Grace recounts this adventure tale of the soul with tremendous insight and a sense of wonder." (Anna Jedrziewski, Retailing Insight)"The legends of earth temples and tombs whisper a different story of humanity. One we must listen to NOW. 'Spirit Traveller' opens our hearts to new perspectives on time, reality and who we are. Theses incredible power-sites hold encrypted wisdom to show us the way to ONE. This story will inspire you to travel and know self." (Tracey Ash, author of Ancient Egyptian Celestial Healing)“I have traveled the world to visit sacred sites, for I have always believed they hold secrets light and dark. I have never read a better book about the his- tory--the true history--of our most sacred of sites than Sonja Grace’s Spirit Traveler. Sonja is a gifted researcher, author, and intuitive. Besides featuring the known history of sites including Stonehenge and St. Winefride’s Well, Sonja invites us on a spirit journey. We fly with her to discover mysteries long forgotten, all of which reveal our ties to the stars and the connectivity of our souls to other people and planets. You will be fascinated, intrigued, and en- lightened.” (Cyndi Dale, author of The Subtle Body Encyclopedia)"History comes alive in an eye-opening way when Sonja Grace lifts the veil of secrecy about each ancient site. What she has revealed is a gift to humanity that can raise us another degree in our collective consciousness." (Joy & Daniel Davis, Beyond 50 Radio)"Traveling non-physically to eight of the worlds most famous ancient sacred sites, Sonja Grace offers us information that scientists and historians are unable to provide. She believes that the small group of humans who created these sacred sites had gifts of sensory perception that the current human race is only now beginning to recognize. She describes it as people being aided by star beings. Readers may prefer to think of it as access to intuitive, universal wisdom from what Jung called the collective unconscious. However it is defined, the insight she provides is fascinating Grace begins each section by separating physical fact from fiction, recounting the legends, analyzing their sources and motivations, and then providing the facts that can be verified to date. Next she recounts her personal experience in meditation. Transported back through time by spirit guides, she experiences standing on the site of Stonehenge, feeling the raw energy of the place before the stones were moved there. She is given insight into the shifting of continents and subsequent destruction of civilizations and into the influx of cosmic rays (something many of us are being told about currently). She watches as a high priestess calls forth the goddess from the waters of Saint Winefride’s Well, meets with the King of Unster at Cashel Rock, and is introduced to a jaguar totem animal at Chichen Itza. Whether readers believe in out-of-body travel or not, this is a densely rendered portrait of ancient sacred sites, painted with a combination of science, history, and metaphysical research." (Retailers Insight)"An inherently fascinating, informative, and occasionally iconoclastic but always consistently compelling study, Spirit Traveler: Unlocking Ancient Mysteries and Secrets of Eight of the World's Great Historic Sites is a unique and critically important addition to personal, community, and academic library Metaphysical Studies collections." (Helen Dumont, Midwest Books)"Of Native American and Norwegian descent, mystic healer Sonja Grace has spent a lifetime traveling in the angelic realms, communicating with the archangels and sharing their wisdom. In Spirit Traveler: Unlocking Ancient Mysteries and Secrets of the World's Great Historic Sites she takes a unique approach to analyzing why famous historic sites, including the Great Pyramids, Stonehenge, Tiwanaku (Bolivia), Hagar Qim (Malta), St. Winifride's Well (Wales), Chichen Itza (Mexico), Skellig Michael (Ireland), The Roci of Cashel (Ireland), were constructed. "Spirit Traveler" offers a completely different and metaphysical perspective on the purpose of these sites and the reasons for their construction and is the companion book to the documentary film 'Spirit Traveler' which will be released around the same time as this volume. Inherently fascinating, exceptionally well written, organized and presented, Spirit Traveler is an especially recommended read for both academia and non-specialist general readers." (Metaphysical Studies Shelf)"This newest work by mystic healer Sonja Grace gives the reader true insight into eight ancient sites. These sites remain shrouded in mystery despite an abundance of research. The religious and cultural biases of historians have influenced modern views about these places of power. First, we are informed about what science has uncovered about each of the places. Then, as a spirit traveler, Sonja Grace goes back in time to witness the creation of these places. Her conversations with star beings, demigods, and human ghosts enlighten us. These entities inform her of the reasons behind the rise and fall of these sacred spaces. Her observations from these travels are very informative. This is a great gift for anyone looking for more information about some of the world’s great historic places." (Awareness Magazine)

It's okay I suppose. There were homes from dwell magazine that appeared in the book which was a turn off for me. I was expecting down to earth dwellings that the average family can afford to do, but the high end cabins are unrealistic for most people.

This is the book, if you are looking for excellent Modern Minimalist designs for homes. It is packed with great Architectural Design. Every page has something to offer. I'm planning a Small Home of 700 sq. ft. Even though most of these homes are larger, they incorporate many of the design ideas, features and concepts I want to use.

Was a very cool book, but all very expensive builds. I was hoping to see some more cool designs/more economical build outs

I’d pay five bucks for these architects to design a fleet of “individually different” submarines so I could laugh my butt off. They would all be the flattest submarines on earth and all have rectangular picture windows subdivided by wooden planks. Not everyone is in love with flat surfaces. Believe it or not there are many, many, much more comfortable surfaces on earth that are not flat. Part of the charm of rugged individualist log cabins is that the logs are at least partially round or have quite a variance in their surfaces, and people are given relief from the harshness of the endless flatness colloquially labeled “modern”. “Modern” began approximately in the 1930’s. It is no longer actually modern. We are now in the year 2018. Today’s modern involves more surprises in light, more sophisticated variety (think more surprises) in texture, depth, materials and negative space. At a glance the title of this book might imply a book about a single rugged individualist building a cabin alone with their own hands. (Cabin, not *house*). That is not this book. This book is about a series of “modern” *houses* in pretty locations built by a team of people with a chunk of money. Therefore I am holding this book to the standard of a book about homes not built by a single individual in the woods. If you like endless flatness, this is the book for you. But for me, a parody of the song Attack Of The Killer Tomatoes applies: ðŸÅ½µAttack of the killer flatness, killer flatness...Flatness ate my sister I think I’m going to miss herðŸÅ½µ To the author: send me a message if you want a more specific explanation and recommendations.

We are looking in the near future to build our own tiny house. Great resource.

The book itself is really good, downloaded it in the Kindle format which does not lend itself well to this type of book. The pictures and formatting or a little weird. The book and the information is incredible.

Excellent book clear beautiful pictures and multiple layouts and plans for each house.

Lots and lots of great ideas! And, great photos.

This is a pretty good book on general Korean culture and history. This book is mainly made for people that have very little information on the subject of Korea and does a pretty decent job of elaborating on some of the nuances of Korean culture and its history. For people that do not know anything about Korean history and culture the book is a fun read that will be able to be read fairly quickly. Although this is a good book for foreigners to read, I have heard from some people that the book is not entirely accurate as a book on culture is extremely difficult to make accurate. In general the book seems to be good and definitely resonates strongly with me as a person who grew up with Korean culture. One other caveat is that the book is slightly biased in a more Western view. You can feel a slight bias against certain traditional aspects of the culture in Korea. Certain more western ideas seem to be shown as superior and that the culture should adapt rather than a more unbiased look at the culture. All in all it is a great book to read and seems for the most part accurate.

Korea. The impossible Country is a passionate comprehensive introduction to Korea, its culture and its people. The book is easy to read, engaging, very informative, and a great introduction to the country, especially if you intend visiting. Tudor's depth of knowledge is admirable and impressive and although his expertise is economics and business, the book has a soul. What is more, Tudor is able to dig into the Korean soul and present it to you in its many faces. You will dive through Korea's collective psyche and understand why Koreans behave and do things in a certain way. This book could have been a Wikipedia sort of book or a travel guide sort of book but it succeeds at being none of that but being informative and a good companion from travelling. The book touches on the eternal and the mundane in five fascinating sections:1- Foundations: We are presented with a brief analysis of the most influential religions in Korea (Buddhism, Christianity and Confucianism) and the specific forms that Capitalism and Democracy take in that country.2- Cultural Codes: We immerse ourselves into those beliefs, ways of being and attitudes that make Koreans who they are: Jeong, Chemyon, Han, Heung, competition, family and neophilia.3- Cold Reality, focuses on those aspects of life that make the functioning of society possible but aren't as thrilling as others: politics, business, work, marriage, studying and being fluent in English.4- In the hours not spent working: eating, drinking, music, cinema, and the living space are the subject of this section.5- More of Us and Less of them, analyses Korean attitudes towards foreigners, gays, women, and the many faces of Korean nationalism. The book is preceded by short historical introduction. Nothing boring, it is short and sweet, very informative and a good introduction to the History of Korea. Plenty of historical details are also found in each chapter when a historical background is needed. The epilogue is a brief summary of what Tudor discusses throughout the book, that is, what makes Koreans a remarkable nation and the challenges that Korea has and needs to face in the changing world we live in.Tudor is basically an economist and there are plenty of statistics and business and economical references in the book. However, they add to the overall believability of the book.I love that one can read the chapters individually if one wants, as they are complete in themselves, making the book very versatile and practical.I didn't find any typo in the book, something really cool.THE ABSENTEES>>> Two of the main absentees in the book are Korea's working classes and rural dwellers, who are barely mentioned. Korea is a very urban country. I get that, but I would have liked having a bit of more background on rural areas and rural culture and see how they differ from the urban Korea or not. On the other hand, the working class is barely mentioned, and I would have liked to know more about them as well. Are their interests, struggles and obsessions the same as those people who would send their kids to an American University and have plastic surgery to look better in their resumé?>>> There is a total absence of Korean literature, theatre and visual arts regarding painting, sculpture and experimental visual arts and artists in section 4. Korea has a vibrant literary scene, a scene where women are dominating and are well-respected. Any visual artists that is not part of the film industry...?>>> One of the chapters I was looking forward to read was that on Korean food. One can find a list of typical Korean dishes anywhere, so I expected this chapter to go beyond that and offer a bit of depth about Korean culinary culture. Tudor does so superficially. Some of the questions that interest me and aren't mentioned are: Which hours do they eat in the day? Is their main meal in the morning, midday or evening? Is there a foodie culture in Korea as we have it in Western countries? Is eating out expensive? Do Korean have a strong street food culture as other Asian countries? Does everybody cook at home these days or is still a women's task? Which differences do you see in food eating according to social classes in Korea? Is there a "vernacular" tea culture in Korea? Do they love programs like MasterChef? Which foreign foods do they love the most? I think Tudor knows all of this and more, so I would love have loved that sort of information commented on, even if lightly. Perhaps in the new edition of the book?KOREAN, REALLY?Some of the things Tudor says about Korean can be seen also in Western Europe, USA and Australia, so I wonder whether those are specifically Korean, and in which ways they are specifically Korean. For example:> Yummy mummies who don't work using their children's achievements to push their own egos and, therefore, push their kids unnecessarily for their own sake are everywhere.> The obsession with technology. Yes, sure, Korean moves faster than other countries in the world of gadgets, but you find similar obsessions with gadgets and technology in many Western countries. there are many people camping outside their local Apple store before the launch of a new gadget or new version of a gadget to get it.> Gay actors who keep in the closet not to destroy their careers. Certainly, gay people have a brighter life in the Western World (Western Europe especially) but, where I live, there are constant items of news on TV about people being abused, bullied or marginalised because they are gay. The Australian ex-swimmer Ian Thorpe, had depression, publicly denied being guy, wrote a biography in which he denied it, and when he came out of the closet said that he had kept it secret out of fear because he didn't know if his country would accept him. Also in Australia, a pop singer Anthony Callea kept his gay self hidden for work career purposes, he said, as most of his fans were female teens. Of course, nobody is making life difficult for them, but people who aren't famous have a more difficult day to day.> The problem of the ageing population and low birth rates. I cannot but agree with what Tudor says, but this is not a typically Korean problem, as it affects most countries of Western Europe, Spain and Italy with one the lowest birth rates in the world and the population ageing at the speed of ageing :).THE EDITINGI notice the editing when the editing is not as good as it should be. I don't mean editing as in correcting typos and odd grammar sentences, I mean editing as the proper job of editing a book by professional editors.> Tudor repeats himself quite often, things are said over and over again in different chapters, sometimes in the same chapter, and it is not always necessary. Just one example, the per capita earnings of Koreans in the post-war era.> At times the book reads like a blog, others like a newspaper article, and others as a proper book. That is distracting to me and not good for any book.> The "Special Feature: Interview with Choi Min-sik" feels like a cut-&-paste from a blog or article added here. I don't know if that is the case, but it reads as a pastiche. The question that matters here is, is this interview really relevant to know the film culture of Korea and necessary to be included in the book? The answer is no.> The data that Tudor uses for some references to religious practices relates to the 1990s! Hello hello, 2016 calling. I wonder how accurate the statistics were in 2012, when the book was written, and today.> The author mentions a few books and articles, but does not quote them properly I understand that the book is for the general public, but including a footnote when an explicit reference is mentioned will not disturb the general populace, it is a matter of courtesy to the author mentioned, a professional backup for your reputation, and some readers could be interested in that book or article. Just an example: " In a paper on the influence of chemyon on Korean consumer culture, Yoosun Hann of the University of Illinois wrote that it was important “not to stand out, but to fit in” (pp. 112-113)RENDERING FOR KINDLE~~ The comprehensive final index is not rendered for Kindle, therefore, not linked, therefore, useless for Kindle users. Moreover, the number of pages relates to the printed edition. Cheat! Cheat! Cheat!~~ If I get an e-book, I expect the book to have any website mentioned in the text out-linked.A WISHAfter reading the book I am sure he is an expert on Korea. Why not including a list of must-read books and reputed sources on Korea?IN SHORTI cannot highlight enough how much I enjoyed this book and how much I recommend it to anybody who wants to know about Korea. However, the book is not polished enough, and some areas and social groups are not mentioned or barely so.

Ok, I read this book while I am at the laundry mat, so it took a while to read it before I could write a review. It is a super interesting book! I have been watching Korean dramas since 2010 and read about this book on a Korean addict's blog. Yup, this book is great for explaining a lot of stuff that we never heard about. Before Korean/Asian dramas entered my world, Asia was basically a blank spot on my map. Yeah, I knew that Japan had paper walls because of earthquakes, and they used to dress in kimonos and eat with chop sticks, but that's about it. Korea had a war called the Korean war. Talk about ignorance on my part! This book helps to explain what happened after the Korean war, how they went about it and why, and all manner of interesting things like culture, history, work ethics or lack thereof, Korean concepts that don't exist here in the west, and the Korean Wave phenomenon. The book is very well written by someone who obviously knows what he is talking about. I would recommend this for everyone because Koreans are just plain fascinating people.

Throughout the past 20 years, I have traveled to 43 countries on 5 continents with a trusted lonely planet in my hand. These guidebooks are more for those that wish to get their hands a little dirty and immerse yourself inside the culture. If you happen to travel in a resort-like fashion, I would still recommend them for day trips that will take you outside the confines of your comfort zone beyond the walls. With the country's detailed history, language guide, and general culture chapters, I have repeatedly been thrown into life changing experiences around the globe. Hands down, you truly can't go wrong.

Unfortunately, this book isn't as good as the Travel on Shoestring (tips and affordable accommodations etc.). it provides general info about the areas and what to do.

One book cannot hope to cover the entire scope of all these islands. While it serves as a preliminary reader it is inadequate for planning a visit

I own about 25 Lonely Planet guides and this is definitely the weakest. Too much attitude, not enough research.

Best guidebook I have found. Lots of less popular islands too. Good practical information. Good for people (like me) who like to have some “paper” with them.

I can't say I was overly impressed with this guide - I just felt like there were random information gaps, and despite saying that it was published in Nov. 2017, there was zero info related to the 2017 hurricanes that hit the Caribbean in the fall. I can't say I learned much that I couldn't have learned from TripAdvisor...

“With 3 editors, 33 contributors, and 15 chapters, this book represents a balanced presentation. There are chapters on botany, crop improvement, phytochemistry, biotechnology, agronomy, diseases, insect pests, postharvest technology, and processing, bioactives of turmeric and one chapter devoted solely to the major chemical, curcumin, production marketing and economics, traditional medicine, culinary attributes, other species of Curcuma, and turmeric production.” ––James Duke, Economic Botany, 61(4) “Stewart has crafted  a very readable tale about industrial flower production. Anyone with interests in horticulture or floriculture, will enjoy the book and it should be a “must read” for anyone teaching Economic Botany. ––Bradley C. Benett, Florida International University, in Economic Botany, 61(4), 2007 "This book provides a useful resource for the researchers and all those who are involved in processing, marketing and use of turmeric."―Cinzia Silori in Advancement in Horticultural Science, No. 3, 2008 "… comprehensive monographic treatment that delves into many aspects about turmeric … . Experts from India, Japan, U.K. and U.S.A. offer a thorough examination of tumeric’s cultivation, market trends, processing, products and medicinal properties. … the first reference work about turmeric, provides exhaustive coverage, and will interest botanists and professionals in the perfumery and food industries and to those interested in alternative and conventional medicine."––Dorothea Bedigian, Missouri Botanical Garden in Plant Science Bulletin, Volume 54, No. 1, 2008

In very short chapters, Piper sheds new light on familiar verses and takes obscure or difficult verses and makes them more clear. His devotion to the glory of God and to encouraging the reader to find full satisfaction in Jesus comes through on every page. Four stars and not five because of the chapter on Lincoln.

I bought this devotional as a Christmas gift for my husband. Not only was it his favorite gift, but we also purchased a second copy for his friend and our Pastor. The chapters are small enough to read in a few minutes, but packed FULL of truth and encouragement for the Christian seeking to be more like Christ. My husband and I both highly recommend this book!

Another outstanding devotional from John Piper. There is no fluff here. Each short meditation provides plenty of meat to chew on. You will want to read each selection slowly and ponder it throughout the day.

I just picked up this book again today. I LOVE being able to read a short excerpt from John Piper and really get something substantial out of it without having to invest tons of time. Even the Introduction to this book is captivating! I especially love Chapters 15 and 25, about reading. Very thought-provoking.The chapters are only 2-3 pages, but aren't short on meaning. These are MEATY chapters and you will definitely have something to chew on for the next day(s) to come. I intend to buy Godward Life Book 2 as well.See my other reviews for other devotional book recommendations!

This book is filled with rich wisdom and biblical principles. Very thought provoking and challenging for anyone who desires to grow in their faith and understanding of God. Savoring is a great way to put it. This daily devotional continues to enrich. I've purchased more for gifts to friends this year!

This book is easy to pick up and read one chapter or devotion and really be able to think about it without feeling too overwhelmed and is a great way to get a meaningful devotion for the day! John Piper is one of my favorite pastor/teachers and as always this book doesn't disappoint.

My pastor recommended this book to me and I love it as a devotional for daily reading. With 120 chapters it should last that many days but I tend to keep reading so it will not last long! I am struggling through Desiring God by Piper and his discussion of "Christian Hedonism" so I was surprised and delighted with this book. I got it on Kindle but I am ordering a hard copy to pass around to friends. It is a great christian book.

I'm on reading 89 of 120 in this Scripture-rich, thought provoking devotional. I appreciate this book because it is very readable and easily accessible with readings that do not exceed two pages. Mostly I agree completely and other times disagree with vigor but that is what makes this a great devotional - no fluff here. If your looking for a meaty, quick, daily devo that stays true to the Word, pick this one up.

Pressfield serves up another extraordinary story. This time he binds together a collage of first person accounts into an extraordinary narrative. Pressfield tells this story from up and down the Israeli, IDF, and IAF ranks and across the international machinations into the run-up and conduct of the 6-day war. Pressfield sets the stage to zoom into the microscopic society of civilian/soldier kids in combat. The kids are led by surprising and extraordinary civilian/commanders to simply never give an inch. The reason was pretty simple as no less than victory and more, that no battle can be lost in so small a geography and no loss is too great to grant the last man standing a retreat. In typical Pressfield style, the meat of story grows to an unstoppable read.Pressfield explains up front that this is an unapologetically biased portrayal from his perspective. Reviewers that might pan the book as one sided are more than adequately warned. Pressfield has the eyewitnesses named for the skeptic to question.Reading a book delivers a particular experience to the reader. The experience here is the combination of a superb book multiplied by one's own recall of the events and the still central and current global realpolitik.I can recall the UN withdrawal from Sinai at Nassar's demand and we knew it was for the express purpose of clearing the way for the Muslim Nationalist's run at their own final solution. I had forgotten that the US was not Israel's ally. I had forgotten that France, alone, was Israel's only material ally. I mentally moved the French up a few notches of respect."In '67 the army is too poor to have its own trucks for troop transport. We must use civilian vehicles ..." This is not an easy book for a `pro-Israel' American to read. It's uncomfortable. Its gut wrenching, actually. My stomach churned at every instance of America's overt abandonment of Israel. Pressfield simply states the facts and the resignation that 'it is what it is' from the kids fighting to survive with the weapons of past generations. Pressfield leaves the reader to ponder the matter.I had so erroneously imagined that the US and Britain did something, anything to help Israel in this war. The US and Britain outrageously abandoned Israel to fate. Just as outrageously, the USSR weaponized the Muslim Nationalists with their very best tech. Israel fought this war against the `state of the art' military tech, surrounded on three sides, with their backs against the water and outnumbered in all ways by 2, 3, or 4 to 1 with no friends willing to make a stand. Israel triumphed mightily all by themselves to earn the respect that has come to define them as the eternally underestimated underdog.Kudos to Pressfield for writing the book he wanted and I appreciate. It blew the fog out of my own memory to deliver a total experience.

The book is one of those that once you begin is hard to put down, the individuals whose lives are being shared come alive in a way that's hard to explain. Living as we do in a dream world here in the U.S. where our idea of a stressful day is not finding a parking place at the mall can't compare with families born and raised in what is, was, and will continue to be a war zone.I have a much better understanding of the size of Israel and more importantly the spirit of the people who we, Christians, refer to as God's Chosen, the Jews.First book I've read on the Six Day War. Many of the participants names I've heard all my life are fleshed out, warts and all. A worthwhile read.

Avi Shlaim a Marxist historian at Oxford in England has said about the 1948 Israel War of Independence, one of his favorite writing subjects:<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>Shlaim’s dismissal here of all but official government documents to write history could be just as easily said about the Six Day War of 1967 as 1948.Thankfully, writers like Steven Pressfield are not listening to Shlaim and others who would throw out valuable historical documentation of these other accounts, in this case soldiers talking about their experiences after the fact. Yes, sometimes it becomes distorted. Memories become blurred, what happened the night before really happened on the day after, a week ago, or remembered just differently. But, for those accounts which are accurate and even for those that are not, to entirely dismiss this as non history is to deny historians a window into the past which can give a personal meaning to war, its effects and its legacy.Steven Pressfield’s expose of the Six Day War in June of 1967, is written this way, from the point of view of the Israelis who fought it. (The Lion’s Gate: On the Front Line of the Six Day War, published by Sentinel, New York: 2014.)Pressfield makes very clear from his introduction to dissuade Shliam’s narrowed view of collecting history:<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>Pressfield wanted to give the reader a different experience. He was fascinated by the “subjected immediacy of the event.” He wanted a sense of being “in the cockpit, inside the tank , under the helmet.” This reviewer believes he accomplished that.He conducted over 60 interviews for this book from 2011-2012 talking to soldiers from the United States, France and Israel. For those who are already past, and who could not for various reasons sit down for interviews, he did, with their permission and permission from their estates take excerpts from past writings and worked them into the narrative. The pilots who flew the now famous preemptive strike on the Egyptian air fields that June 5 morning describe in detail their approach, their kill shots, and their returns, a perspective you can’t get from after action, battlefield or situation reports. The anguish they felt when one of their squadron was lost, and how they would return to fly sortie after sortie, in Sinai, in the West Bank and the Golan Heights for the duration of the war.Named “Operation Moked” actually began as the brainchild of Ezer Weizmann, the commander of the Israel Air Force, in 1962. It came out of contingency plans for total war, against Syria, Egypt and Jordan, as the Soviet Union continually armed the Arab States giving them a massive quantitative edge. By the time of implementation on the morning of June 5, 1967, the Israelis knew exactly what they were doing. Some have said and Pressfield brings this up in his book, that the war was won during those first few hours of destroying most of the Arab air force. The rest was “mop up.”But, maybe the most compelling part of that war and Pressfield’s compilation of it was the taking of Jerusalem. On the day the war started the battle plan was to leave Jerusalem and the West Bank out of it. The Israelis told King Hussein if he stays out of the conflict Israel will not attack his territory. That all changed at about 10:30 that first morning when the Jordanians began shelling into Jewish Jerusalem. The Paratroopers, a generation of young soldiers who had never been to the “Old City” didn’t even know where The Wall (Ha Kotel) was. When they reached it and secured the position some cried and others prayed at it, even while there was sporadic fighting throughout the city. The sacrifice of battalion 66 at Ammunition Hill (Givat HaTachmoshet) and the changed look on Ariel Sharon’s face hundreds of miles away in Sinai when he heard over the radio and told his officers, “Jerusalem is in our hands.” All of this being told by the soldiers themselves, who were there, and who experienced it. If you are supporter of Israel you cannot get through these passages without being moved by them. It is, and will remain one of the most emotional moments in Jewish history.Pressfield does pay some homages to the past. Joseph Trumpeldor, one of the legendary Jewish heroes even before the mandate who was killed fighting Arab marauders at Tel Hai in 1920. Captain Orde Wingate, one of the few British mandate soldiers assigned to Palestine who actually supported the Zionist cause and was responsible for many of the tactics employed by the IDF in its early years. He dedicates the book to Lou Lenart who was one of the original Mitnadvim (foreign volunteers) who made up the IAF in the 1948 war. He also includes a chapter on Lenart’s history in that war. It’s a break from the 1967 action. Some might find it distracting but to Israeli history hounds like myself, I loved every minute of it. I know exactly where Pressfield was coming from by adding it.Also included, was the Sinai campaign of which many of those officers who fought the Six Day War, were soldiers eleven years earlier in 1956. That perspective plays an important role on their thinking in Pressfield’s IDF narratives for the next war.One other homage was a little less obvious, but nonetheless extremely poignant. It was added as a postscript. A book published in English in 1970, “The Seventh Day,” is set up the same way as Pressfield’s work. The difference is most of the interviews and discussions in that book are how they felt about the war, during and after it, their hopes and fears for the future. Although some battle scenes are presented it is mostly philosophy and was conducted exclusively with Kibbutzniks, a past Israel when the Kibbutz, its people, and its symbol of Jewish liberty were the socialist democracy that prevailed within the State.Pressfield’s work includes the kibbutz but is not exclusive to those participants, which makes his work more metropolitan in design, a more modern look at the State from a 21st century example. Pressfield differs from “The Seventh Day” in that his interviews were less about the philosophical and more about the soldier in the field, doing what soldiers do in war—killing the enemy. The postscript in “The Lion’s Gate,” can be found in “The Seventh Day” from Abba Kovner, of Kibbutz Ein Hachoresch. Kovner described watching Israel mobilize from a civilian to a military country within hours before the war actually started. The newsstand owner, the sales girl across the street, the butcher next door, and a group of young men huddled around a transistor radio down the block, peeling off one by one as each heard the code name for their unit’s mobilization. “A silence like no other silence enveloped the city.”Pressfield credits “After These Things” a different publication where Kovner’s description is rewritten. It doesn’t appear in the bibliography but added as a postscript there probably wasn’t time. I only know about Kovner’s entry because I have “The Seventh Day” in my personal library and it was a passage that has stuck with me over the years. The Israelis lost approximately 800 soldiers in that war with thousands more injured. That is far cry from the 6000 deaths they had experienced nineteen years earlier in their War of Independence but still, the pain of losing loved ones, friends, sons, daughters, husbands, uncles, fathers, that pain is not reduced by lesser casualties for those who experience it. Several passages in the book the soldiers describe how all they want is revenge for the way their buddies who were killed in battle, giving further confirmation of a true band of brothers’ mentality in war. As described here by the Israeli soldiers who fought it, you will not get a closer examination into fighting war and how it is perceived in real time than Steven Pressfield’s “The Lion’s Gate.”

I love Kendall Ryan, she's always a one click for me so I was really disappointed when this book fell totally flat. The writing felt rushed and amateur, the story felt way too quick and the insta-love was a huge turn off. It also iust kind of felt gross (Spoiler below)Nic sleeps with Elle without a condom, without ever telling her that hes a "male escort" who regularly sleeps with his clients. That to me just screams yuck, and I thought it was incredibly disrespectful. Beyond that the entire story kind of leads up to her finally finding out hes a male escort and it was not even an exciting climax. She gets told and is like "oh I feel so stupid, I should have known." Should have known? Who in their right mind would ever expect that? And then all he does is apologize and says he loves her after literally 4 dates of straight lying to her and shes like "oh he loves me? Hes so sexy I cant resist!" Like really? Have some self respect! Then shes more appalled that hes never done oral with a client then anything else. This book fell completely flat, honestly wish I could get my money back. I skipped the last 2 chapters because the whole thing was just completely ridiculous. Disappointed for sure, hope Kendall Ryan's next release is nothing like this one.

*SPOILERS*Disclaimer-This was my first book from this author. Found the title from another author's recommended reading list, so maybe the issues I have with the author's writing are what she's known for, so take my subjective review for what it's worth. The writing and dialogue is childish and simplistic and does not read at all like adult level reading, more like middle school, all telling no showing. The plot of a male escort falling in love with a client had potential, but it wasn't treated with enough respect and that lack of respect made it a difficult read for me to get into practically from the first couple of chapters. His best friend isn't a successful business owner--he's his pimp who owns a brothel. Sexism from page one, trying to make it seem more acceptable and legit just because it's all male? Immediate red flag.My issues (from a person who thinks sex workers should be legalized, taxed, and provided protections like any other industry employee who provides a service), he's a male escort, he gets paid to have sex with women, yet he vehemently protests that he's NOT a prostitute. Yes, yes you are. Own it. Don't give me a hero who's proud that he's constantly in demand for his "services" then try to make me believe he's got a bleeding heart I should care about because he's ashamed of his work and not a prostitute because he has lunch once a month with a 'grandma' client who he doesn't sleep with. When he had sex without a condom TWICE with the heroine without telling her about his work, that made me absolutely hate him. And his rule about not kissing clients because it's too intimate (Julia Roberts did it first and better in PRETTY WOMAN, thanks) and no oral, right...high end professional female clients pay him thousands of dollars a night and tolerate their male prostitute not providing oral sex or kissing because HE doesn't want to?The heroine, ugh. Whiny, Shallow, Superficial (he's soooo sexy, nearly every other sentence), self-deprecating wimp. I get it, she's curvy, don't repeatedly tell me that every other page. Women come in all shapes and sizes, including thin, thick, heavy, curvy, whatever. We're all beautiful inside and out, EXCEPT when you have women bashing and body shaming other women! Heroine's ex is a dick, insults her to her face, dumps her and shows up at her brother's wedding with a new girlfriend who she and her soon to be sister in law immediately start insulting and body shaming "bitch," "scrawny new girlfriend", and hero mentally criticizing her ex for not being as tall a him and "thinning on top". No chance the new girlfriend had no idea what the ex did? But of course all women hate other women and we're ok and should support that, right? When she finds out she was lied to, for their entire time they were together, he meets her at a coffee shop, they have about a 10 second, 4 sentence conversation where he apologizes, she forgives him then straight back to her place for sex. Seriously? And don't get me started on how she's constantly hitting his arm "playfully" I hate women who do that. Would you put up with a guy constantly smacking a girl on the arm? Use your words to express yourself, and I'm supposed to believe the heroine went to and graduated from law school??Maybe this is what this author is known for: fast, shallow, simple completely implausible stories with unrealistic, totally unlikable characters, but definitely not worth my time or my money. A disappointed buy.

This book had so much promise and started out so well, it just didn’t finish strong. I was kinda disappointed because I really enjoyed the first 3/4 of the story.I loved the chemistry between Nic and Elle. It was so strong and watching them get to know each other was wonderful. I especially liked Nic, even though I didn’t like his choice of profession. Being with Elle made him feel like himself again and wanting for more from life. I was rooting for him all along. Elle has come out of a bad relation with a horrible man and was going to have to face him with his new girlfriend had a brother’s wedding. Her friend, and soon to be sisters-in-law, hires Nic to be her date to make her ex jealous. That’s where their relationship starts. What I didn’t like was Elle’s beast friend, Christine! She was a bitch! She treated Nic like trash just because she hired him and I don’t think she treated Elle like a best friend should! I’ve never disliked a character more! I also felt like the whole book lead up to Elle finding out that Nic was an escort and was anticipating how that was going to go down. Then, in my opinion, it was resolved too quickly. I mean, what woman would just let that go with a short, simple conversation? I’m glad it was resolved, but I feel like there should have been more to it.I did enjoy the majority of the book, just disappointed by the last few chapters.

As stated by the other reviewers, the book is packed with numerous ideas and suggestions leading to better photos. However, the discussion is all directed towards the author's special area of photography: fashion. For those who have this specialty, this is an invaluable guide. But how useful is the book for those who take very different kinds of photos? I did a quick (and rather arbitrary analysis) of the projects to see how match of the discussion could be transferred to other types of subject matter. My judgment was that 20 (of the 52) projects could be adapted by those shooting any subject matter. Twelve more might be useful with some further work, and 20 seemed remote from any field outside of fashion. Others may very well make different judgements about where to place each assignment. The conclusion seems to stand, however: the direct usefulness of this volume will depend upon the details of the subject matter at which you are directing your camera. All photographers, however, can appreciate in general terms the kind of analyses being done in the book even if not directly related to their work.

Do you stay within the lines? Or are you the type who see lines as mere guide lines and venture beyond them? If so then this book is for you. It is for the person who has a decent understanding of how a camera works and can control lighting, since most of the examples shown require taking your camera off the Professional mode (P). What makes this book interesting is seeing the world through Lindsay eyes and each image has an impression of her heart on them. So while you may copy her style, you must venture away from them and discover your own style. To that end this book is highly recommended. To help you control lighting situations "better" I also recommend Lindsay's other book "Shooting in Sh*tty light".

I've watched several Creative Live instructional videos by Lindsay Adler on studio lighting and post processing in Photoshop. This book is something else. It's a book to stimulate your creative juices. She looks at photos by other modern fashion and beauty photographers and explains how she creates new, original photos in a similar style. It makes you want to get out your camera and try it yourself. It can send you off in an entirely new direction.

So pleased with this book. Lindsay shares her own inspirations, makes suggestions and teaches step by step how she created images. She shares links of other artists and professionals to further reference each chapter. The book is well written and is exactly what I hoped it would be. I have the kindle version and do not find it confusing at all. This book is worth far beyond 5 stars!

This book is full of creative, practical exercises for all skill levels. As a photographer always on the lookout for more shooters to follow, I especially love that she references a handful of photographers to check out that relate to each exercise. Many of these exercises are fundamental, timeless practices that will outlive whatever current trends happen to be. This book should not only be taught to every new student, but any veteran photographer will also learn more than a few things.

I purchased this book last year for myself and for a friend in hopes of improving our photography. Most of the projects were very engaging, including some of the more challenging processing assignments in the later chapters. Lindsay Adler's writing/teaching style is very down to earth and her instructions are generally easy to follow. Both my friend and I looked forward to each week's challenge and to see how we each interpreted the assignments. I would definitely recommend running through the challenges with another person because it helps keep you motivated. And, bottom line, your photography is likely to improve.

We bought both his books, if your on the fence, just check out the youtube videos and you'll see that this book is worth it!

Having seen one of Lindsay's courses on Creative Live, I was drawn to her bubbly personality and great teaching style. The challenges in her book are great to continually stretch your abilities as a photographer and learn new techniques.
