Robert Alter's English translation of the Hebrew Bible is nothing short than magnificent! I have been reading Robert Alter's English translation of the Hebrew Bible since buying his English translation of the Torah (The Five Books of Moses), Psalms, the Former Prophets, the David Story and a few other of his English translations of the Hebrew Bible. However, now I received his ENTIRE English translation of the Hebrew Bible (The Torah, The Prophets and The Writings). Alter's English translation, with accompanying commentary, plums the very depths of the Hebrew Bible that bring out the true beauty, elegance and power of the Hebrew Scriptures. Old well-known stories come alive with new meaning and insights. Also, a very welcomed addition to Alter's commentary in his English translation is Alter's acknowledgment of the Christian understanding and exegetical perspective of certain passaged in the Hebrew Bible even if he only dismisses them as invalid. There is no problem as to this as Alter's commentary is based on a traditional Jewish understanding of the Hebrew Bible. Alter even cites Rashi so its a Jewish commentary on the Hebrew Scriptures so Alter's commentary view is understandable. Overall I'm enjoying Robert Alter's English translation of the Hebrew Bible and I am reading it in conjunction with N.T. Wright's English translation of the New Testament called The Kingdom New Testament and The New English Translation of the Septuagint (NETS). What a wonderful way to go back to and understand the original biblical languages and sources of God's Holy Word. Glory be to God!
I read much of this as I studied screenwriting, which is fitting for the Bible tends to read at a clip, never bogged down in florrid description. Indeed, here, the David Saga alone sings. Amid David's transition from innocence to swagger and guile and later debauchery, we witness a complex figure whose toggle between love and cruelty leaps off the page. David is surely no Jonathan. Throughout 1st / 2nd Samuel, Kings, Chronicles, we get the best single narrative with the most complex persona we have passed down from antiquity coming to life in a bracing new way. Alter's choices capture the prose of a raw, cultured people, contradiction in terms intended. I, too, have not read it all, but his Genesis, indeed, retains an ancient cadence, without sacrificing a kind of concrete beauty in language choices.
I completed a Master’s degree in classical Hebrew and comparative semitics. I have enjoyed the various single editions as well as the smaller collections of his translation work with footnote commentary. Undoubtedly, his running commentary is worth the price of this major work not to mention the poetic play that his translation reflects thoughout. From what I have already witnessed from his already published portions, the work is destined to be a new classic to be consulted for a lifetime for all who are serious students of the Hebrew Bible.My only critique, so far, is not against the translation itself but against the Simon & Norton editorial team whose review touts Alter’s fine work as “...the only single author translation by someone who has spent a lifetime studying literary artistry in both Hebrew and English.†What? Did they simply close their eyes to the major translation of Eugene Peterson’s Message version or the more recent one by Fuller Seminary professor, Dr. John Goldingay’s First Testament?!?! Or was it a deliberate anti-Christian bias that accounts for the reason these other two major translations by single authors is not mentioned? Whatever the case may be, Alter is surely not part of any such collusion to be sure! That said, the work is surely a monumental accomplishment that should be on the shelf of any serious student of the Bible.Received set this morning. Beautiful covers and slipcase. Nevetheless, again Amazon shipped package with improper packing so that drop-damage was sustained to upper left-hand corner of casing. Fortunately, there was no damage to the volume near that corner! Nonetheless, this is now multiple times products have been damaged due to improper packaging. I am real hesitant to purchase future special edition volumes and or slipcase editions from them.
My wife has spent many hours reading the King James bible since childhood, although I would not consider a religious fanatic. While appreciating the King James version, she has often wondered its accuracies. In fact the start of our relationship was my telling her the joke about biblical accuracy after centuries of dedicated script copying, that what is now "celibate" was once "celebrate". When she saw the NY Times magazine article about Dr. Alter's life work, she was very excited to begin a new lifetime read. Unfortunately for me, I've lost a bit of my lifetime companion, but it's a small price to watch a happy, enthusiastic spouse!
Alter operates under the common western assumption that if it is aesthetically pleasing it cannot be true, and if it is true it cannot be beautiful. I am an artist, and as an artist I have the responsibility not only to entertain, but also to tell the truth. These aims are not incompatible. Alter is quite honest about his aim of blunting any doctrinal content in order to make the aesthetic effect better. When reading this translation one thing becomes very clear. When read as mere invention it is considerably less profound aesthetically. I will ask you one question to think about. If we assume, in order to make Picasso's Guernica a better painting that the event never happened, does this make the painting a better painting?
