Masanobu Fukuoka saw what modern industrial farming was doing to the water, land and the farmers (both in terms of lifestyle and debt), and spent his life working on finding ways that food could be grown in a non polluting, sustainable manner. After a number of years he had rebuilt the soil on his family farm and proved that he could equal or better the yields of the "petroleum farmers" with his no chemical, lazy man's way of natural farming. Although the book discusses his methods and rationale, much time is devoted to showing what is wrong with the currently popular methods of farming.Throughout the book Mr Fukuoka lament's the change in farmer's lives from many years ago when there was much more leisure in the village life, whereas today they have to struggle to survive working long hours everyday and still cannot get out of debt. Debt created incidentally by being sold a system that relies on pesticides, herbicides, chemical fertilizers, as well as large amounts of motorized equipment. The revolving door between the chemical companies and agricultural departments in government as well as school reliance on grants from these institutions are discussed, consumerism, our fetish for perfectly formed produce, and much, much more.This book can be read in a short period and is written in a nice conversational manner (kudos to Mr Larry Korn for his work there as well). For me this is such an important book that I have given a number of copies to friends. This book will change the way you think- read it today!

Mr. Fukuoka has written a beautiful book on the benefits of natural farming. Basically he says that what is the most important factor in food production is the fertility of the soil. Good nutrition is dependent on a nutrient-rich soil. This book also has some of the author's philosophy of life. He states that any good farmer specialist needs to start with philosophy, then incorporate the science. I highly recommend this book to anyone growing food--be they industrial farmers or backyard growing enthusiasts.

Like many oriental authors, Masanobu spends much of his writing describing his philosophy. So easily finding out the precise methods he used to obtain the impressive yields of crops he obtained, is difficult. He does provide a brief overview… for example, he uses clover as a perpetual cover crop, straw as mulch, he plants into the cover crop without tillage, (although he weakens the clover by flooding the field in spring) he coats his seeds with clay to prevent them being eaten by birds and animals. But he does not provide detailed accounts.But really this does not matter because his book is a plea to trust nature and work with nature and to honour traditional, gentle ways of relating to each other and our world. In our frantic, hurried, consumer oriented, greed and profit driven world, I love his inspiring and wise message of living simply with nature

A very enjoyable read. To say this is a book only about philosophy or farming or ecology would not do it justice. While it touches on all of those topics, it's none of them. If you're open to the deeper meaning of texts, not just reading but actually philosophizing and seeking perspective, I think you will gain a lot more from this book than someone who only 'reads words' for their face value. The best I can tell you is, read it. You 'will' gain a new perspective. You're not going to agree with everything here, and some of the wording may offend you, but if you're open, I really do believe you will take something from it.

A whole different way of looking at agriculture. Mostly easy to read, short chapters. Author was way ahead of his time regarding environmental issues and agribusiness use of chemicals destroying the land and the water. He shows that working with nature produces improved soil and water AND better yields with less work.

I can't recommend this book highly enough, as a thoughtful, deeply ecological presentation of the natural farming version of permaculture. Mr. Fukuoka clearly was a keen, careful observer of nature and nature's ways, which is the basis of permaculture practice. It was interesting to note that Bill Mollison, the "father of permaculture", took many ideas from Mr. Fukuoka's practice. I've also been fascinated at the way these various people all came to similar conclusions and practices at roughly the same time period. The "cross-pollination", so to speak, has been very fruitful! Being steeped in the martial arts for many years, I was also struck by the strong Zen influence in many of Mr. Fukuoka's practices. I gighly commed this book to anyone interested in the field of permaculture.

This book was referred to me by a Facebook Permaculture group in my community. It reminds me of reading Deschooling and John Gatto's Dumbing Us Down when I started questioning education -- it is a book that came into my life when I was really ready to read it. There is a great wisdom to "Less is More" and the older I get the more I feel unsettled by technological progress. For me, Dr. Fukuoka explains why this unsettling exists.This is a philosophical book that uses growing food as its subject but growing is a metaphor for us, being fully human and seeking our natural state. I hate to oversimplify it, but I really believe that so many of our problems are due to our denial and separation from nature and our over-dependence on science as an answer for everything.The reassuring part for me is that when gardening or growing your own food, he reminded me that scientific intervention introduces more problems that we scramble to fix. Working with the natural system provides not only better food but a better mind and an enjoyable life.

Got the book for my husband, he seems to like it fine. He's the farmer in the family. The concepts are good, but the guy who wrote it lived in Japan, and some of the techniques/crops aren't necessarily applicable here to the south in the US. That was the only criticism heard. Other than that, fast shipping, good job.

Sure, the author is a little eccentric.He likes to use a lot of !!!!!!!!!!!!!! to make the point.He has some great horror stories about his mobile home rental business. Which almost exactly mirrored my own horrible experiences.That is why this book is great.The stories.You get real in the trenches stories of buying businesses. The author claimsto have been involved in 3,100 acquisitions. He even had a colleauge that tried to buy Disney.Such as:How and why to buy the business you are currently working for. (p. 11)Use the 'Checkbook' system to cut expenses - much easier than increasing sales:p.50A clever way an employee tried to steal $3.5 million. How to make sure that doesn't happen. p. 55How the author bought an $8 million dollar company for $100. p. 18The first half of the book is basics how to go about it.The second half is more of a text book on financial topics. It's nice because it'sbased on just the stuff you might run into doing buy outs.How to calculate add-backs (p 26) something a lot of other books skip.I'm currently in the wannabe phase -But I'm glad I picked it up.A lot of these books come off as theory but not this one.AND the Author lived in the house that was used in Arnold Schwarzenegger's"Raw Deal" (p. 13). Which this book inspired me to watch. It turned out to be one of Arnold's best. So there is that.

It's a step-by-step-guid to buying a business for yourself or with a business partner or co-worker. It doesn't matter what size business you are talking about, this book can guide you through the process it takes to buying and acquiring any new business. It's straight forward and to the point, without deviating into anything other than necessary information.Although not a lot of this information changes over time, the information seemed a bit outdated. There are a lot of great forms and checklists that can be beneficial to anyone following this book exactly.There were multiple spelling and grammar issues, that really distracts from the content of the book, and makes me question the validity of the information contained. The overuse of exclamation marks was annoying and broke up the flow of reading.The cover is engaging and matches well to the contents of the book. I'd rate this book a 3/5.

This is a MUST have book for starting out in life. I wish I had came upon it sooner. Sterling Cooper does a fantastic job at explaining key hot topics that relate to business, and not simply business, but also teaches you to think far better than you could have before on your own. There are many other great books out there which discuss operating of a business as a CEO, and they are great books. These authors put a lot of work grinding these books down, and cranking them out as best as they can to give you the most of your time and money. It is very rare when you find a mind that is able to think far better, and bigger than the simplistic view of a technician worker, and instead take a broader view to things. Sterling Cooper, you are the best. Thank you for taking the time to write this book. You are an amazing author.

Despite the recent publication date, this book is clearly a reprint of a title published a quarter-century ago. For example the text recommends using Lotus 1-2-3 for analysis, and compares the value of the DOS version of Lotus vs the Windows version.While the basic concepts involved in buying a business don't change, nearly half of the page count is devoted to state-by-state advice on how to form a corporation, the risks/rewards of buying stock vs assets, how do execute an ESOP and other things that definitely change over time because of changes to the legal landscape.The book was not professionally edited or typeset. As a result, it's hard to read, overloaded !!!! with exclamation marks!!!! and COMPLETE SENTENCES IN CAPITAL LETTERS!!!! and disorganized. A trivial investment in editing would have dramatically improved the odds that the book accomplishes the author's goals.The author claims to have been involved in over 3200 deals, yet he doesn't name a single successful one. He talks about successfully doing deals as large as $100 million, including publicly traded companies, but he doesn't name a single one that he purchased. His credibility would be greatly enhanced if he said "I bought XYZ Corp in 1992" but he omits even minimal credentials.Further damaging his credibility, the book directs readers to his amateurish website. Where you find broken links, offers for $10-per-month web hosting, an ad for his auto detailing service, and a grab-bag of other offers that a multi-millionaire with 3200 buyout deals in his pocket would never bother with.

A quick--but not at all superficial--read that gives you the tools and perspective to harness focused urgency in your life. A quote I particularly like: "The use of rational assumptions until they are proven false is a powerful tool to maintain direction and speed toward your objective." This is the kind of thinking that allows you to get into action almost immediately, without waiting for the full picture to take shape (which it almost never will anyway). In a way it's like the advice aspiring writers often get about getting started writing, which seems simplistic but is actually fundamental: start writing. It doesn't matter if you fumble at first--keep going. Only when you get writing/moving will all the latent ideas and possibilities around you start to take solid form so that you can actually grab hold of them. Until then they're just potential--you might be able to sense them but you can't put them to use. Keiper's book is geared toward helping you take those first steps--including doing some initial assessment of a situation--and then, once underway, adjusting course based on the feedback you get once in motion. It talks about making commitments, getting "first-mover advantage," the intuitive aspects of operating with urgency, and more. Keiper doesn't talk down to the reader, and he acknowledges that some readers may be familiar with some of the material here. But really I found the book uniquely inspiring, not only in content but because of the unique way in which Keiper's own passion and voice come through. For me one of the most inspiring things about the book is its motivational quality--you feel like getting to work after reading this, and more importantly you see how easy it can be to get started.

This book does two things that every good book should do. It gives you a fresh perspective and gives you something to talk about!i was fortunate to do a study of this book with with a couple dozen other folks who were leaders, coaches, speakers, and the one thing we all pulled from this book is the relevancy to living our life with a sense of urgency -- proactive urgency - before the storms hit. Living our life with proactive urgency keeps us focused on the goals and when the storms do hit we are already prepared.The book is broken into two major parts. Section one folks on just what proactive urgency is - why it is valuable. Section two takes the book to the next level -- it gets to the how. How we can live our life with pro urgency. I particularly liked the chapter dealiing with fear. That was worth the read alone.Here are just a few William Keiper quotes from the book that resonated with me.- "Choosing to be urgent ... means embracing ourselves as we are now and moving into action."- "Acting with purposeful urgency requires accepting the risks of doing"- "You are already. Just. Go. This is what successful people know and never forget."- "If you want to know your future, the actions you take now will create it."- "The world only moves for you when you act "

The Power of Urgency is a powerful and thought provoking call to action towards getting what you want. I read it, studied it and then used it as a guide as I put my own system in place towards playing "all out" and saw immediate results. The beauty of the The Power of Urgency is that not only does it kick start you into action, but it also serves to help you get unstuck. It does both by providing great insights into the role that fear, inauthenticity, lack of commitment and not dealing with the truth play in our not having what we want. William's Urgency Rule # 17 states, "Proactive Urgency is personal. If pursued with clarity and commitment, it will transform your work, your life and the lives of those around you". In just ten days with this book, I see great evidence of this.

In the wonderful introduction (written by Steve Chandler) to this book he points out that author William Keiper "has caught lightning in a bottle". I couldn't agree more. This book is like riding a rail at 100 miles an hour. You can't stop and you can't get off and you don't want to. I love the whole idea that we have such amazing power that we only use when we are forced to use it in a crisis, but we can turn it around and be proactive. I will think differently about how I go after the things that are important to me. If you are stuck--buy this book. If you read it you can't stay stuck.

This book helped me to pass my real estate exam! There was a reason I was a former reading teacher and not a math teacher. I would recommend this book to help study for the math portion of the real estate exam. It was easy to follow, gave step by step solutions, and provided plenty of practice. You can move to different chapters and master what you are most comfortable with first. Most math problems have answers not as tricky as the word problems so when you come up with an answer you know you are correct if you completed the steps. I studied the math last and passed the Florida exam my first try. Money well spent.

This book is AWESOME for the math-phobic like myself. Not only are there clear explanations of each type of problem, but there are helpful hints that really are helpful!!!

I recently passed the Salesperson exam on the first try. This book was valuable in helping me prepare for the math questions. I would recommend it to anyone studying for the real estate exam.
