I got this in conjunction with a trip to see the recent King Tut exhibit and it's been in heavy rotation ever since (My kids, probably like other kids, enjoy rereading favorites.) It's short but chock full of interesting details about the discovery of King Tut's tomb. I really enjoyed it myself and think it was well done. Reading level is likely 7-9 years, but the younger kids will enjoy being read to as well. It's not scary- really more informative and leads to an understanding that there is no evidence to support the notion of a curse on the tomb.

fun informational book

This is a fun fact filled book about King Tut and his mysterious curse (which isn't so mysterious) that surrounded the people who uncovered his tomb. This book will delight elementary children. It has lots of bright colorful illustrations. The font is big and easy to read too. The story follows the life of the young king and then jumps to when his tomb is discovered. It also shows how the Egyptians buried their leaders and how King Tut's curse appeared after his tomb was opened. This is a fun story kids will enjoy about King Tut and how rumors and innuendos can create a mystique around an event.

Insight Pitch: My Life as a Major League Closer, by Skip Lockwood

Review

“Joining the Mets in mid-season, Skip quickly became the dependable ‘closer’ we needed. He and I had long conversations about exactly how to prepare for each game and what it meant to leave nothing to chance. As a result, he always pitched with intensity and mental toughness. I told him, ‘Every time you go cross over that foul line, it’s Green Light...it’s Go Time.’ In his new book he takes you with us, onto the field and into the action.” —Tom Seaver, MLB Hall of Famer, friend, and teammate; author, The Art of Pitching“Skippy, my boy. Great job on your new book. You’re still throwing strikes.” —Luis Tiant, Boston Red Sox Hall of Famer and longtime friend “The mid and late 1970s are hardly remembered as the best of times for the New York Mets, but that’s not Skip Lockwood’s fault. Lost in the midst of mediocrity was some truly fine work out of the bullpen by a man who was as introspective and observant as any player of his generation. Armed with a keen sense of humor and self-deprecation, Skip’s memoir, Insight Pitch, provides a unique look at life in the major leagues before the players enjoyed the riches and security of today’s big leaguers.” --Howie Rose, Broadcaster, New York Mets, WOR Radio 710 AM, New York “The stories Skip shares in Insight Pitch of his major league career are sprinkled with humor and sensitivity. He shares with us his feelings and emotions when facing hitters in tough situations. This is a terrific book.” -Rico Petrocelli, Red Sox Hall of Famer “Skip Lockwood writes he might have been the "most ill-equipped person" to ever don a major league uniform, yet few seem better suited to tell the story of a baseball life. Skip’s glasses may have fogged up on the mound, but his perspective on the challenges, rewards, and realities of the game as it was truly played couldn’t be more clear-eyed. Hop in the bullpen cart with Skip Lockwood and settle in for a most Amazin’ ride.” —Greg Prince, Faith and Fear in Flushing“Insight Pitch was particularly poignant as I read it during my stint playing soccer in the National Championships. It helped me conceptualize.” —Johann Clendenin, USMC “From throwing a ball against the wall at his home as a boy to the major leagues, Skip takes us on a remarkable journey. He really knocks it out of the park. This book is a must read for any boy or girl and coaches, for that matter, interested in sports.” —Dr. Harvey Dulberg

This is a wonderful book for anyone who had dreams of being a big leaguer. It will take you back to your days playing little league, sharing the love of the game with your Dad and remembering your baseball hero's from your youth. It provides insight into the life and the mind of players who played without the security of guaranteed contracts and free agency. Players that played for the love of the game while fulfilling their childhood dreams. Nice job Skip!

Who knew that Skip Lockwood could produce such a thoughtful and intriguing book!Thoroughly enjoyed reading about his baseball journey!

A very honest voice, with amazing lessons for the young player and interesting reminisces for those of a certain age. It's not an exaggeration to say I've read hundreds of baseball books -- nor to number this one among the best.

A terrific yarn about an amazing athlete and his remarkable tenacity. Filled with "insights'" into a pitcher's mindset and delightful anecdotes. Once I started, I just kept reading. Now reading it aloud to my baseball-loving grandson--bridges three generations!

This book lives up to it's title, Skip's remarkable journey on how he followed his dream to reality,A great read !

Wonderful insights from this great read! Highly recommended.

"Insight Pitch" is one of the finest baseball books I have ever read - and I have read plenty of them. Former Mets closer Skip Lockwood brings an unusual literary sensibility to the task of inviting the reader inside the mind of a major league pitcher, and onto the mound as he faces tough opponents. His use of metaphor in describing baseball situations adds a depth of expression and style that is a rarity among sports books. The saga begins with Skip's halcyon days growing up in Norwood, Massachusetts, and starring for Catholic Memorial High School's baseball team. He shares a fascinating account of the day when the representatives of five MLB teams made the pilgrimage to the Lockwood home in an attempt to sign the young baseball phenom to a professional contract as a "Bonus Baby," Skip's parents decided to leave the room when Skip was negotiating with the scout from the Kansas City Athletics. The account of how young Skip handled that negotiation is one of the most fascinating and insightful chapters of the book. After struggling for several years in the minor leagues - unable to hit a professional curve ball - Skip took the advice of those in the Athletics organization who had invested in him, and turned himself into a pitcher. He pitched for several teams, most notably the Mets. He finished his injury-plagued career signing as the first free agent inked by the Boston Red Sox.Mr. Lockwood's intelligence is on full display as he shares deeply held convictions and astute observations about the game of baseball and the role it has played in his life. He earned an MBA from MIT as a Sloan Fellow. He shares in great detail the techniques he developed for visualizing a game and an encounter with a batter before they would ever happen in real time. He would visualize the situation once as if he were viewing it dispassionately from the stands. But then he would also visualize the same situation as if he were peering through his eyes from the pitcher's mound. That dual approach is exactly what Skip Lockwood the author offers to his readers here. We get to observe, as if in the stands, the life of a successful ballplayer. But we also get to see, hear, and feel what it was like in his mind and heart as some of the ups and downs of his career played themselves out. The result is a thoroughly engaging and instructive window into America's game. The book is chock full of deep insights into baseball, handling both success and disappointment, balancing pursuit of excellence with a realistic assessment of strengths and weaknesses. If you love baseball, you will not want to miss reading this book. If you are lukewarm about baseball, reading this book may turn up the heat, and you may never watch a baseball game the same way ever again.

Claude “Skip” Lockwood was a major league pitcher who was on six different teams over a 12 year career. He wasn’t a star player on any of them, never won any awards or all-star appearances or had an extraordinary game that will be seen forever on videos. However, what he did collect during his career was many humorous and interesting stories. He shares them in this very entertaining and fast paced memoir, “Insight Pitch.”Lockwood was originally signed by the Kansas City Athletics as a 17 year old “bonus baby” infielder and it is this signing where he shares one of his many humorous stories. When the A’s sent a team executive named Pat Friday to the Lockwood residence to sign Skip, the negotiations went fine with Skip and his father, but when the moment came for the final decision to sign, Dad left the room, leaving Skip and Friday alone. Skip took a pen and made two changes to the contract. One was to correct the name on the contract to his given name, “Claude Edward Lockwood, Jr.” Then came this gem: “Then I said ‘There’s just one more thing right here,’ pointing to the space where the number $35,000 had been written. I put an oversized ‘1’ in front of it.”Then Friday calls owner Charlie Finley, who asks Skip why he should pay him that kind of money – the answer was “Because I’ll make you a winner.” The phone is given back to Friday, Finley agrees to the new amount and Lockwood becomes a bonus baby. This story was one the best of many great ones in the book, mainly because of the guts it took for a 17 year old kid to do that in the days of the reserve clause and no major league draft.Lockwood shares the same type of stories through his transformation from an infelider to a pitcher in the minors, then from a struggling starting pitcher for the Milwaukee Brewers to a more successful relief pitcher for the New York Mets. The best of these was the prank that Mets clubhouse manager Herbie Norman played on Lockwood on his first day as a Met.Immediately upon arrival at Shea Stadium, Norman hurries Lockwood out to the bullpen, as he keeps saying how the team needs Skip to be ready to pitch right away. Norman leads him to the bullpen, where Lockwood greets each man personally and tells them how he is excited to be on the team. Problem was that this was the VISITING bullpen and each man he spoke to was a member of the Montreal Expos. These are just two of the many examples of the captivating and funny stories that Lockwood shares and makes the book one that any baseball fan will enjoy, whether or not he or she has ever heard of Lockwood without having to look up his statistics on Baseball Reference. This page-turner is one of the best sports memoirs I have read.I wish to thank Sports Publishing for providing a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Review

“In her engaging travel memoir [Marcum] captures the spirit of saudade with an eye for detail and a playful earnestness…In the remote islands of the Azores, Marcum seems to have found her spot.” —The New York Times Book Review“If you need a summer vacation but can’t get out of town, take a trip to the Azores with Diana Marcum. Her travel memoir about her special connection to the islands will make you want to drop everything and hop on the next flight to paradise.” —HelloGiggles“Lazy mornings, family intrigue, cantankerous bulls, hope. Diana Marcum found it all on a potato-shaped island in the middle of the Atlantic. And thank goodness she did, for the resulting tale is as inspirational as it is entertaining. Marcum is the perfect travel companion: smart, open-minded, and just the right amount of funny. She’s also endearing, in a Bad News Bears sort of way, and by the end of The Tenth Island I found myself not only liking her but rooting for her too.” —Eric Weiner, author of The Geography of Bliss

I have to admit that none of the First Reads selections particularly stood out to me this month, including this one. It took me two hours to decide, even with the help of other reviews, and I finally "settled" on this book only because in my military days, I ended up visiting the Azores several times. I expected to be mildly entertained at best, so was wonderfully surprised at the read I ended up getting. It was a beautiful book. Slow and relaxing, with vivid description that I found haunting. Such as this passage:"When I finally saw the Azores, they were brilliant green specs in a dark sea, peeking in and out of the mist. No wonder they may have been lost and found a few times."And this one:"Alberto laughed. 'You think the Tenth Island is a place or group of people?' he scoffed. 'The Tenth Island is what you carry inside you. It's what's left when everything else falls away. Those of us who live between worlds just know the Tenth Island better. No matter where I have lived—I have never left my island.'"This book was a perfect read for a lazy Sunday morning, in a world where I have been longing for a little escape. I respect everyone's opinions, and not every book is for every person, but this particular book was perfect for me!!!

I am in awe at the skill of Ms Marcum in capturing the essence and spirit of other people and in making me feel I am one of those in her tale.Early in “The Tenth Island,” I found this quote from the author that describes not only the author, but me:‘I had also, for many years, longed for things swallowed in the past, forever out of reach. Now I finally knew where everyone went. And I may have found a word for something inside me that I didn’t even know what it was anymore. Saudade.” — from page 13.Now, on to explain what pleases me, and what concerns me while reading “The Tenth Island,” by Diana Marcum.THE WRITINGSTYLE, FLOW, EDITING First rate. As you will see in the below excerpt, this Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist is a writer who is expert at describing scenes and at communicating the thoughts and emotions of her subjects and, even, her own innermost secrets.BLUSH FACTOR - Language & Content *** The below paragraph is edited for clarity and as to who made the statement referred to. By older I meant a woman in her eighties and from whom one would not usually expect to hear putting her words in quite the way she did. It was one of the charms of the writing. In terms of profanities: No worries. In terms of frank talk of sex, well, some may be taken aback at how honest one character, an older woman in her eighties, addresses alternative means of sexual pleasure. I was surprised, but not shocked. Indeed, I have no qualms whatsoever with the inclusion of her discussion. However, I do know some folks would not forgive me if I failed to warn them. I certainly would not want anyone to presume that the frank talk was THAT harsh. It was surprising because the words came out of an elderly woman.CONFUSIONIn her introduction, the author indicates this is not a journalistic work, primarily because she changed names and even created one or more characters. Perhaps more is fictionalized, and perhaps not. While I greatly appreciate her disclaimer, and her honesty in so stating, it is impossible for me to determine how truthful her story was. This is not a criticism, though, because if I were to write my own memoir, I would find such a warning to be necessary.EXCERPT“Hey-a Diana,” he said. “I’m-a here with my good, good friend. He owns a beautiful hotel, right next to the water. I tell him there’s this writer who likes the Azores but never been to the Azores. He says, ‘Tell her to come and stay at my hotel. No problem.’ We got another friend way high with the airline. He’ll get you a free ticket. No-a strings. We know you can’t make-a no promises.”I thanked him but told him reporters weren’t allowed to take free trips. And I didn’t know anyone who might ask me for a movie script.“Don’t write anything,” he said. “Fernanda says to tell you, you should say yes.”Fernanda got on the phone. She told me that the American way is that “you wash my back, I wash yours.” But the Azorean way is that everybody works together to make enough for everybody. “These men put together a big pot of sopa—you grab a bowl.”The next day I was having lunch with a writer I considered a mentor even though we were only a few years apart. Even to his face, I called him the Manly Author. He had a lot in common with those Azorean bulls. Small spaces made him edgy; you could almost imagine him pawing the ground. He was a Very Serious Investigative Journalist for a big paper, and his favorite line of attack was the hard charge. It was with a sense of embarrassment that I told him how tempted I was by Frank’s offer for a free trip to the Azores. I figured my resolve needed the disapproval he was sure to provide.“Go,” he said. “You got no conflict. Just don’t write anything else about them for the Fresno paper. You got one foot out the door anyway.”“But what do you think they expect? What do they want from me?” I asked.“Same thing everyone wants,” he said. “They want someone to know their story. And, [expletive deleted], maybe it’s supposed to be a part of your own story.”Somehow that seemed...’Taken from page 27, “The Tenth Island” by Diana Marcum.BOTTOM LINEI was so enthralled by this story that I could rate it five stars with no concern. Had the author simply stated, “Although some of what follows is drawn from people I know and love, this work is more fiction than fact, and should be treated as fiction. My choice to rate this work at four stars is primarily to ensure that potential readers are alerted to this. Four stars is still a high rating.Four stars out of five. If I could rate it 4.5, though, or even 4*, that would be better. I greatly enjoyed the writing. Will you help me? I hope and trust that this review has helped you. Great read for those looking for an entertaining, fun, summer book. I enjoyed the characters that the author surrounded herself with and the lighthearted humor throughout the book.I have to strongly disagree with some of the lower ratings that a couple of people mentioned about the book not having enough of the history of the Azores and the history of the relationship with the Azores and CA. This is not a history book on the Azores or the immigrants that migrated to the United States. This book is about the love affair one woman had with the beautiful culture of the Azoreans and the path that took her there.

I was so enthralled by the Azores I kept googling for more info and now plan to go there next May. She is a great writer and I felt that she shared her hopes and fears with me throughout the adventure she took me on. I could smell the sea and the breads baking and taste the cheese. I could not have asked for anything more from a book as I enjoyed her friends as much as she did. A triumph.

Writing as clear and transparent as the blue sky of the Azores islands .. with touching characters pulled between their ancestors' island roots and their American opportunities for success. The author so skillfully describes smells, tastes, and sounds that the book is almost as vibrant as a movie. History is easily and naturally woven through the personal tale, never heavy or disruptive of the natural flow.Memorable opening to a corner of the world ... not surprising that far flung descendants return from across the ocean. Diana Marcum uses her reporting expertise to focus on tiny details that stand for deep truths. And when there is no word to express an emotion, she'll admit that too.

This book is a quick read with a unique story of a young man raised jointly by his closeted gay father and his openly lesbian mother, and her partner. It is one more contribution to the growing discussion of how the church can lovingly minister to those who are same-sex attracted. The metaphor of "messy grace" is helpful, a call to live in the tension between "grace and truth."But as I finished the book, I wondered if events have moved too fast for him to cover every scenario? With gay marriage now the law of the land through the U.S., there are more and more married gay couples. We can assume that gay married couples who have a profession of faith will select affirming churches, such as the Episcopal Church or the United Church of Christ, but that scenario is not Kaltenbach's main concern. He is addressing those who practice homosexuality and make no profession of faith. Yet should they respond to the Gospel and decide to follow Christ, what then? If such a gay married couple makes a commitment to Christ, will our expectation be that they divorce in order to abandon their state-sanctioned but biblically forbidden homosexual practice and pursue righteousness? This crucial question is never raised or answered by Kaltenbach, a glaring shortcoming in an otherwise helpful book.

Caleb Kaltenbach is a pastor with a unique past. When he was still a child, his mother divorced his father and married another woman. Meanwhile, his father hid his own homosexuality until Caleb was in college. He grew up completely immersed in gay culture: going to pride parades, tagging along with his mom and her partner to parties, and watching his parents maligned by 'Christians.'One story in particular broke my heart. When he was a teenager, he went with his mom and her partner to a gay pride parade. While there, they met a group of 'Christian' hecklers waving signs that said, "Fags go away," and "Jesus has no room for you." The hecklers used water-guns to shoot them with urine. As they were being verbally and physically demeaned, Caleb looked at his mother and asked her, "Why are those people acting like that?" Her response was heartbreaking: "Well, Caleb, they're Christians, and Christians hate gay people. Christians don't like anyone who's not like them."It would be easy for us, as Christians, to immediately object, "I don't hate gay people. I'm just speaking the truth." But what do our actions say? Are our lives proclaiming God's Gospel of love to all creation? Or, have we predetermined who is worthy of hearing God's plan to reconcile all humanity back to himself? If there's one issue that many in the Church have dropped the ball on, it's the issue of homosexuality. Most Christians simply haven't been equipped to deal with this complex and sensitive subject. And by the way, this is a topic that isn't going away. We need to learn how to deal with this issue in a way that reflects both the truth of God's Word and his great love for every member of the human family. 'Messy Grace' is an important book for Christians to read and understand as they meet their gay friends, family members, or neighbors.Kaltenbach is plain about his purpose for writing this book: "I wrote this book for anyone who wants to know how to relate with grace and truth toward members of the LGBT community." He delivers exactly what he hoped to.He walks the fine line between grace and truth, never making room for sin on either side. One whole chapter is dedicated to what the Bible says about homosexuality - he even deals with some common arguments against what scripture plainly teaches (his rebuttal to the argument that "Jesus never said anything about homosexuality" is fantastic). However, he also lambasts Christians who act more like self-righteous Pharisees than Jesus - unwilling to befriend or reach out to their gay neighbors, treating them more like lepers than people who have been made in the image of God.He tells about one of his mother's friends who got AIDs. Right before he passed away, they visited him in the hospital and watched as his family stood far away from him. Unwilling to touch their dying son and brother because of his sickness. How tragic! And what a contrast to the way Jesus was willing to touch those who society deemed unclean. Throughout this book, Kaltenbach encourages Christians to follow in the footsteps of Christ by pursuing others while they are still sinners.Paul tells us in Romans, "But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8). This verse followed me the whole time I was reading this book. God loved me, he pursued me, he sent his son to die for me - all while I was a sinner, despising and rejecting him. If we are truly going to be followers of Jesus, we must reenact this same pursuit of those that God loves. We ought to pursue, love, and give our lives to those that God is loving. We ought to show sacrificial love to our gay neighbors while they are yet sinners. We need to once-and-for-all do away with the notion that someone must get their moral act together before we extend grace and love.Grace and love must be shown while they are yet sinners. Grace and love are the catalyst for life-transformation; not the reward for it.Over the course of the book, Kaltenbach tells his own story, the story of becoming a Christian pastor despite having two very liberal, gay parents. Throughout each chapter, he draws out important lessons about how to show our gay neighbors the love of God. He includes a lot of practical information and even points a way forward for churches to help people who are experiencing homosexual temptations. Was there anything I didn't like about it? Honestly, I had to try to find something negative to say. In the last chapter or two, he tells about how his parents finally began attending church and got saved. In his discussion on homosexuals who get saved, he makes it clear that living a homosexual lifestyle is not compatible with Christianity; however, there was a time or two that I wished he had used the word 'repent' to describe the complete turning involved in coming to faith in Jesus. I believe the idea is in the text but there was a time or two when someone reading a sentence out of context might think that he doesn't see a complete change as necessary. But ultimately, this is a very minor issue. The book as a whole is clear that the issue of homosexuality needs to be addressed via the middle way of love, holding on to both grace and truth. It's a fantastic guide for every believer that wants to see the Kingdom advance in our culture. We need to be equipped to talk intelligently and sensitively about this subject. This book is a great introduction for that exact purpose.May we all learn to walk the way of grace, truth, and love.

In Caleb Kaltenbach’s book, Messy Grace, he shares his personal journey of having two gay parents, finding his way to the Lord as a teenager, and eventually learning how to love those in the LGBT community without compromising his conviction about homosexuality. You follow Caleb as he describes how he was partly raised by his mom and her partner, and how he even participated in gay pride parades. He was taught that Christian hate gay people. When he was teenager, he started going to church, and he eventually became a Christian and was baptized. His parents were less than supportive, even his dad who was still in the closet at the time. He eventually went to Christian college (my alma mater, Ozark Christian College) and became a pastor, and has learned about how to minister to the LGBT community. He walks us through what it means for us as Christians to live in the tension between grace and truth, demonstrating that it is possible as he displays in his own personal journey. He shares what this can look like in the context of a church, and helps us to see that in order to love as Jesus loved those who struggle, we have to be willing to get a little messy. You will be inspired and challenged by Caleb’s testimony and biblically grounded insight, if you choose to take these truths to heart. This is a book that every Christian about 13 or older needs to read, especially if you have loved one that identifies as LGBT. This book is available pretty everywhere Christian books are sold, so get your copy today!

I feel this is a must read for every follower of Christ whose main desire is to love like Jesus! I am thankful that Caleb wrote this book. He presents the reader with real life scenarios and dilemmas. He addresses the direct questions that many books of this kind have failed to address. I believe it is because of his God-given insight and Biblical perspective - gained through his own life experience and faith journey with Jesus Christ. This has been one of the most - if not THE most helpful books that I have found thus far, as I have sought answers on how to walk out Christlike love to LGBT family members and the LGBTQ community at large. Actually, the same principles he describes apply as we relate to anyone who might not believe, act, or look the same as we do.

Give Bees a Chance, by Bethany Barton

From School Library Journal

Gr 2–5—Barton employs the same style as in her award-winning book I'm Trying To Love Spiders, but this time bees are the topic. Readers are introduced to Edgar, a slightly thumb-shaped boy with a curlicue of hair. Edgar doesn't like bees, mainly because he doesn't want to be stung. The narrator tries to convince him of the insects' good qualities, yet Edgar continues to fret about their stingers and venom sacs. But facts about how long bees have lived on Earth and how they pollinate flowers and produce honey start to amaze Edgar. When he learns about dwindling bee populations, he decides that planting some bee-friendly flowers and keeping peace with them are pretty sweet alternatives to being frightened. The comical pen drawings with pastel-colored backgrounds, created using Adobe Photoshop, are visually pleasing. Childlike print in various sizes adds pizzazz, and the overall look is attractive. Barton explains that she has taken liberties with her bees, as they have only two legs in most of the illustrations instead of six. (The endpapers offer a more accurate depiction of different species.) Given the number of unloved animals and insects, Barton has an endless supply of subject matter to continue this refreshing, fun format. VERDICT A must for the lighter side of nonfiction. A great way to introduce bees to elementary students.—Sandra Welzenbach, Villarreal Elementary School, San Antonio

It was definitely not quite in shape for the amount of money I paid, but it is a niche area of law so there is no competition and none of my classmates had one to sell. Still it came quickly and it is in good enough shape to use.

Finding My Platoon Brothers: Vietnam Then and Now, by Glyn Haynie

Review

The excerpts Glyn selected to close the book are like a trip back in time, and really put you there with these young men; the tributes and obituaries which make up its final quarter are a beautiful touch, and, unsurprisingly, its saddest part. I love books, but rarely have I paid one such respect - I simply could not put it down, telling myself "just one more chapter", and there was no way I was going to consider it finished until I had certainly read every obituary; every post-script; every appendix, excerpt and caption. For the work Glyn has put into it, and the sacrifices which begot it, it deserves no less.Glyn is an excellent writer and an indisputably genuine top-quality author. Clearly a project of passion and obsession, he has done his research about his platoon brothers - alive and fallen - in intensive detail. Needless to say, "Finding my Platoon Brothers" is professionally written and flawlessly proofed. This is a book rich in tribute, yet even richer in inspiration, and while veterans may relate to it, non-veterans can learn a lot from it - no less than the real meaning of trust, and the importance of people, to each other.-- Matt McAvoy, Author

And well worth reading for anyone interested in learning about the life changing events and lasting effects associated with this war.

Glyn Haynie belongs to a great brotherhood. The bond was formed in the Vietnam war, but Glyn has kept it strong and relevant for a lifetime (and beyond via his writings). While reading, "Finding My Platoon Brothers", he took me on an amazing journey in which he shared his intimate memories. His attention to detail is refreshing and the story is very well told. One thing is certain, when you get on this roller coaster, be sure to fasten your seat belt and get ready to feel like you have actually spent some time in Nam. Well done, Mr. Haynie, well done.

Very interesting being taken on Glyn's persistence in reconnecting with his brothers and journey back to Vietnam battle skirmish and feelings that resurfaced along the journey.

Instantly, even before starting the book, and then reading the introductory matter, the poignancy of this book strikes you, and you know immediately it is going to be an affecting read, compounded not only by the terrible trauma these poor young boys (little more than children, in many cases) experienced in the Vietnam war, but, perhaps in some ways more upsettingly, by the disgraceful injustice of vilification by their own country, upon their return. To draw a positive, though, these experiences surely enhanced their lifelong sense of camaraderie, even in death, and it is that which this book is all about.“Finding my Platoon Brothers” is more than just a book: it is a quest, for Glyn to pay the tribute he has perhaps never addressed before, not just to the fallen, but to his own experiences in the conflict. As well as helping Glyn come to terms with the PTSD he didn’t even know he carried for most of his life, his modern-day mission has served another extremely important and motivating function: that of realizing the importance of a genuine, professional purpose in retirement. The “Platoon Brothers” project became his full-time job, his vocation and his calling, and he carries out the whole task with the professionalism and aptitude of a skilled journalist, even though it was a therapeutic purge for the author.Whilst Glyn manages to engage a fair number of his brothers, in the creation of this project, perhaps more telling, in some ways, is the small number of people which refused to talk with him – maybe this speaks louder about the horrors of Vietnam than any of the responses he did manage to achieve. And, “achieve” is definitely the right word for what Glyn has managed. There are really two halves to “Finding my Platoon Brothers”: the first outlines Glyn’s desire to organize the long overdue reunion, and in this part, I did feel, perhaps, he included a lot of mundane details about booking, administration and the like, and perhaps not just a few too many words. But, it is the second half which gives the whole book balance and identity, and here you really find yourself drawn into life in the combat zone. The way in which Glyn intersperses his visits to each site with a recount of events when he was there in 1969 is quite brilliant, and lays the context of the whole sum perfectly. He has provided some wonderful photographs from his platoon, and from his 2018 trip, making the former all the more poignant; although these photographs are simply of the day-to-day, and don’t provide any drama, they draw you into the locale, with a thousand stories between the lines; seeing these ageing men as young soldiers stops you in your tracks, and makes you search deep within the grainy prints, for the human inside the soldier. It is interesting and heart-warming that the reunion and closure experience gave Glyn the strength to show a newfound pride in his veteran status, rather than concealing it any longer, and so it should. I’ve never experienced war first-hand and pray I never will, but will always have a deep pride and respect for those that have, especially when risking their life in the service of their country, wherever that may be. The guilt to which Glyn alludes (and his friend, Mike, in the closing words) is stinging, and left me in no doubt that his claim in the book’s blurb is completely true: its substance truly is something only a war veteran can comprehend. As we all know, that particular war is one which invoked a lot of guilt. Additionally, Glyn’s findings about the decades-long aftermath of the use of Agent Orange during the conflict are staggering, and whilst he clearly harbours justifiable resentment for this, I did wonder if perhaps this topic could have presented a clear objective for the book, to achieve a legacy of exposing this terrible scandal – though, I suppose there are many others which set out to do this, and this particular book is about the people, not the horror. The excerpts Glyn selected to close the book are like a trip back in time, and really put you there with these young men; the tributes and obituaries which make up its final quarter are a beautiful touch, and, unsurprisingly, its saddest part. I love books, but rarely have I paid one such respect - I simply could not put it down, telling myself “just one more chapter”, and there was no way I was going to consider it finished until I had certainly read every obituary; every post-script; every appendix, excerpt and caption. For the work Glyn has put into it, and the sacrifices which begot it, it deserves no less.Glyn is an excellent writer and an indisputably genuine top-quality author. Clearly a project of passion and obsession, he has done his research about his platoon brothers – alive and fallen – in intensive detail. Needless to say, “Finding my Platoon Brothers” is professionally written and flawlessly proofed. This is a book rich in tribute, yet even richer in inspiration, and while veterans may relate to it, non-veterans can learn a lot from it - no less than the real meaning of trust, and the importance of people, to each other.

This is the third book I have read from Glyn in the last couple years and once again he has written an amazing book. The insights he shares with his readers of the human costs of war as seen by his first hand account of those times reminds one of how life can change in an instant and the lasting impact it can have for years to come. His book is also a lasting tribute to those who have served and the sacrifices they made for all of us and their brothers.

Enjoyed reading this book.

This is the third book I have read by Glyn Haynie. He continues his exceptional writing style and delivers a moving tribute to those who served in Vietnam. His book provides both a personal historical perspective and an enlightening view of present day Vietnam.

Last Year's Jesus: A Novella and Nine Stories, by Ellen Slezak

Amazon.com Review

In her collection Last Year's Jesus, Ellen Slezak seems to take an almost defiant interest in her bleak hometown of Detroit. Her stories are peopled by marginal folks--a widow who runs a junk shop, an 11-year-old girl often left at home alone, a man diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder. The protagonist in "Here in Car City" opens a European-style pension in the inner city against all advice, and Slezak seems to share her character's perverse determination not to give up on this tough town and its tough people. Several Motor City themes weave together in the novella "Head, Heart, Legs, or Arms," set against the backdrop of the 1967 Detroit race riots. In a dark panorama that recalls Spike Lee's Summer of Sam, a young girl endures the riots as she follows the Tigers's pennant race on her transistor radio. Her older sister attends the University of Michigan, where a serial killer is stalking the co-eds; her younger sister lies dying in the hospital. Slezak captures the way historical events play out in ordinary life: "On the sixth day of the riots, Aunt Jenny made meat loaf for dinner. Mona watched as she mixed together sticky raw meat, egg yolks, bread crumbs, and chopped onion, which Mona particularly didn't like." Never mind the carnage; when you're 11, it's the onions that really get to you. --Claire Dederer

From Publishers Weekly

Don't be fooled by the playful title: the Polish-Catholic working class in Detroit and its environs, as depicted in Slezak's debut collection, is a largely gloomy heritage. Fractured families, alcoholism, dead-end jobs and above all a tendency toward inertia keep Slezak's characters rooted in a city of "busted-up businesses" or in "dull and modest" Michigan towns. In the best and liveliest stories, acerbic first-person voices puncture the malaise, such as when awkward college student Theresa Jagielski takes readers through a twist on a morality play that probes race and generational differences with subtle irony in the title story. In "Here in Car City," a young woman who opens the Pensione Detroit (an "inexpensive European-style hotel") in a run-down neighborhood forges an unforgettable bond with an industrious Polish hustler, and "If You Treat Things Right" showcases the bitter, knowing sass of middle-aged Jenny, a lifelong auto-plant worker contending with her sister's embarrassing infatuation with a college boy. Third-person narration serves Slezak less well; the remaining stories, though admirably loaded with details of Detroit's urban blight and the inner workings of its primary struggling industry, begin to suffer from a tonal and thematic sameness (dead or dying siblings, for example, are featured in three of the 10 stories). Such careful layering both authenticates the material and dulls the senses. Readers who have been missing gritty realism will find something to latch onto here, and the choice of place which Slezak renders vividly is both familiar and foreign enough to attract. This collection of short stories is startling in it's ability to capture what life is like in Southeastern Michigan... Especially if you have any fondness for or familiarity with the working class Detroit suburbs or Polish-American culture. I just read "Tomato Watch" and I wasn't able to sleep until I wrote this review. It's not just the ethnic angle, Slezak also captures the - the what? the malaise? the trapped, depressed feeling? - that young people who grow up in Detroit's suburbs often have. In many ways, the thirty year old heroine of "Tomato Watch" is as trapped as her ninety-five year old Polish grandfather... Incredible... I left that world twenty years ago and this book brought it all back... To capture all that in one short story just knocks me out.Her style of writing also has this great subtle sarcasm, this vague sorrow, this fatalistic bitterness that can be seen in works by other Michigan-based or Michigan-influenced writers: Check out anything by Michael Moore, Elmore Leonard, A. M. Wellman or even Loren Estlemen...If you're from that part of the world, or just want to sample how strange your life would be if you were, "Last Year's Jesus" is a remarkable experience. (Just read "Tomato Watch," first)

A young girl follows the progression of a Passion Play, developing a crush along the way on the boy who played Jesus the previous year. She is a plain-looking girl, but has the rare joy of feeling important while he gives her special attention.A pregnant woman learns the importance of life during her summer of taking care of her sometimes-senile grandfather and his tomato patch.New to town, Pete Flatte inadvertently discovers the unfortunate circumstances surrounding the death of thousands of geese. These geese are the pride of the town. There is even a festival that heralds their arrival each October.....until they start mysteriously dying.A widowed mother, her young daughter and their lonely friend learn different forms of sacrifice....sometimes forced, other times brought on by friendship and love.In an attempt to improve things, CeAnn opens a Pensione offering inexpensive, quaint lodging just like that which can be found in Europe. Her efforts prove futile as she finds herself surrounded by all things run-down....alcoholism, abandoned buildings, etc. Her steadfast determination, however, refuses to allow her to be dragged down to their level.A young girl struggles with many changes in her life...the riots, one sister going off to college and the other near death. The one constant, and almost comforting, aspect of her life is the voice of Ernie Harwell, the radio commentator for the Detroit Tigers. This is just a sampling of the 10 stories (9 shorts and one novella) that make up "Last Year's Jesus". Each story is either set in Detroit or takes place close by with characters that once lived in the city. The book brings the reality of living in a city such as Detroit to its readers. Not by telling of many tragic happenings that make up the statistics of the neighborhood, but by sharing the every day lives of every day characters.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Ellen Slezak has taken an interesting approach to her writing. The reader shouldn't expect whole stories. It doesn't have the feel of a "here's the plot, here's the problem, and here's the solution" type book because that's not what it's supposed to be. This is something that must be understood before opening the pages, or the reader will be disappointed with the "no real ending" conclusions. There are things to be learned from the characters. Although there are no "happy endings" per se, there are oftentimes revelations. This book isn't the normal piece of fiction. In fact, it almost reads like non-fiction, like an episode of "60 minutes" or "Dateline" where a time period, a turning point, of someone's life is shared with the world. It's a book that touches close to home for many people, and may even open the hearts and eyes of some. The stories will pull the reader in and provide a captivating reality until the last page.

Reading Ellen Slezak's collection of short sotries, I kept thinking how different Detroit was from where I grew up. There's plenty of vivid detail in this solid, unpretentious prose to give a visitor an inside look at a Polish-American working class suburb. Enough to make me feel like I'd been out of town - somewhere I'd never visited before. The feelings evoked, though, were familiar. The characters never behave like stick figures or glossed-over personalities meant to be played by movie or sitcom actors. Their stories are interesting because they inhabit a specific time and place, but they have the sort of problems and insecurities and unlikely ambitions a lot of us have. More than a few have the quirky familiarity of your closest relatives, the ones you neglect until, years later, you recognize them in something you've done and wonder how they are, how they're getting along - because it wasn't obvious at the time, but those were the people you learned from the most. Not because they were especially wise. They were real.I think these stories are very good. Like some of the best fiction, they're about people who've seen their world change, one era passing into the next, and they're coping with it - more or less.
