I LOVED Blogging for Authors. AS much as Barb's books have taught me, I learned more here. This book is for sure for more than authors new to blogging...I've been blogging since 2002 and I can see some things I want to change. I love how she talks about blogging as a conversation. I am interested in blogging about more than writing and I found a bunch of keywords to help me expand what I can write about. Don't know what keywords are? Barb explains:) I also took to heart the part about author branding--how all platforms across social media and even the books themselves should all have a similar look to them. My various media (Facebook, Twitter and my blog are the big ones) and book covers could use a unifying element i.e. a recognizable brand. There's so much more to Blogging for Authors but those are my biggest three takeaways. Mostly because my brain can only hold about three to-do tasks at a time. I will be going back to this book again and again. It's that good.

This little book includes a wealth of helpful information for the beginning blogger. I have a lot to learn but this was a great tool for getting started. Itâ€™s full of helpful tips and information that I would not have otherwise known. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is even thinking about starting a blog.

Rated 4.5 of 5I feel as though I'm generally pretty proficient when it comes to technology and social media, and after a few books promising 'help' to writers that I've found to be less than actually helpful, I was just a tad hesitant to go into this book (even though I had requested it).But I'm glad I read this, and found Barb Drozdowich's Blogging for Authors to be one of the most useful books I have read in a very long time.One of the things I really like about reading on a Kindle is how easy it is to highlight something, and I use the feature a lot to make note of special passages that I might want to use in a review. I started highlighting passages in this book very early on ... not so much to quote from, but for things I felt were important, as a writer/blogger, to follow up on at a later time. And as I read, I highlighted more and more until I realized that essentially, this entire book is well-written and packed full of useful advice, even to someone such as I who thought he had a pretty good handle on this already.The book is written to speak to the most basic and simplest of needs - to the wanna-be-blogger who doesn't know where to start. But the basics are a good thing to be reminded of for those of us who think we're beyond this. There were so many little tid-bits of information that I know, or should know, that I've simply over-looked or never gotten around to fixing. Drozdowich reminds me that all these little aspects are important to anyone wishing to take blogging up a level.It should be noted that Drozdowich definitely leans in favor for one particular blogging platform (though she does touch on some of the others) and if you are not a fan of Wordpress for some reason, you might not like that she spends so much time here. I have blogs on Wordpress, Blogger, and Weebly and I can understand why she focuses on Wordpress.This was a VERY handy book. I am delighted that I got the chance to read it for review. Now I will re-read it for myself, and then I will look for some of the other books that Barb Drozdowich has put together.Looking for a good book? The tips written on the book are already simplified, so it's a good thing that the author simplified everything to avoid confusion.

The information in this book is really helpful and has exposed to me some of the mistakes I make when trying to get the attention of a lady online. I really like how it simply talks about the do's and don't when it comes to online dating, how to present yourself and how to asses every possible situation. Because it is a good book to read, I have given it a perfect rating 5 stars.

For what I have read of it, I have found it to be easy and little to read and it is informative to the point of some great ideas. This book was very informative. Who knew there was so much work and thought that went into creating your dating profile. After reading this book , I implemented some of the tips on how to write a better profile. Many of the tips are simple things that I didn't even consider when entering the world of online dating. A really nice read..

From working in multiple labs I know the ever-present fear of breaking expensive equipment, so I picked this up in an effort to learn about preventive maintenance for my HPLC systems. It's a pretty short book filled with practical and trustworthy advice. Its greatest strength is how it dispenses lots of practical knowledge that is otherwise learned only firsthand or direct from a mentor. However, I find it a bit lacking in details in many sections when it relates to theory (perhaps that's to be expected). Good for a true novice or to fill in gaps in your training, but anyone who likes in-depth information will quickly want to move from this text to something more comprehensive. It's also a bit out of date and tends to focus on LC-UV applications over LC-MS. Finally, it's coverage of some LC applications such as aqueous normal phase is really not up to par. Still, I would recommend it to anyone needing a strong introduction to HPLC applications and theory.

This book is a combination of things to HPLC: a general desk reference and an introductory guide to HPLC. Topically, the book is broad in scope that makes it perfect as an introduction to HPLC topics, as well as a starting point for projects. The topical split of the book is very even. It covers practical plumbing/hardware issues, chromatographic theory, applications (MS, preparative HPLC, etc...), and method development.The author's writing style and grasp of technical writing is perfect in my opinion. The writing is concise, descriptions are precise and detailed, and are accompanied by technical drawings and useful appendices (glossary, troubleshooting guide, etc...). The text is even slightly humorous, but thankfully the author doesn't waste time with lots of 'hand-holding'.I recommend this as the perfect book for scientists who are new to HPLC, and for technicians with practical HPLC experience who want to broaden their knowledge. Overall the book is so broad that it probably won't be the only text on HPLC that you own, but it has enough depth to be useful as a starting point for inquiry.

Author is pretty much ALMOST okay when he stays on the path of talking about hormone / hormone activity.(Almost in that he is WAY off base when he talks about so-called "Adrenal Fatigue". That info is simply totally incorrect... there is no such thing... otherwise every Cushing's patient would be cured after a few months by just letting their adrenal glands wear out - yet that does NOT happen).Then the author goes WAAAY New Age with HIS interpretation of Keto dieting.The BEST fats are the saturated ones (lard, coconut oil - more saturated fat than lard or tallow.. yet at least at one other place he actually recommends coconut oil!)Likewise with his percentages that HE recommends for his Keto version.Clueless.Just like with his exercise recommendations."Experts" (who usually aren't) should stay within their own field ... and not assume expertise in everything.

Alex Deford was born in 1971 and died just 8 years later in 1980. She had Cystic Fibrosis. Alex: The Life of a Child is the story of her life as told by her father. When I was 12 or 13 I bought a copy of this book at a yard sale. I read it multiple times. For some reason I really loved the story of Alex. Itâ€™s been years since I last read it and it is still a great story. It is touching and told with such honesty and heartbreaking love. I highly recommend reading it.

This version of the book is abridged. Several key parts are left out, including Mr. Deford's discussion of how they came to adopt their daughter, Scarlett. This is a wonderful book, but the Kindle version is abbreviated. I recommend getting a version in print.

I first discovered this story in the December 1984 Reader's Digest in the featured book section. Even abbreviated, it was staggering. I saw the TV film later on, and still later, I found and bought the whole book. Since then, few January 19th's, the anniversary of her death, have passed that I have not thought of Alex and the family she left behind. I might do her memory more justice if I remembered her birthday instead, but her father did not write of her birth the way he did of her death.Frank Deford is an excellent and prolific writer of both fact and fiction and who makes personal to the reader every event he shares of Alex's life and death. Especially her death. Perhaps he didn't mean to make her death more poignant than her life, but it would be impossible to play it down. He paints nearly every hour of that last day of her life so vividly that I wondered if he was taking notes as it happened; he did, after all, keep a personal journal (no, I don't believe that he kept a notebook by the side of his dying baby's bed, only that he wrote it in such detail that it was as if he had done so.) These days, most people who die of lengthy, drawn-out illnesses die peacefully, only semi-conscious, doped up to the gills against unbearable pain. But though Alex might have been in pain, death did not take her peacefully. She didn't fight it, but neither did she go quietly. She was awake and aware to the very last second of her short life. As he said, she had spent so much of her little life dying that she wasn't about to miss the final act when it came. It was difficult enough to read when I wasn't yet a parent. It became even more meaningful after I became a parent. And then still more, when my daughter was diagnosed with a brain tumor.Alex's story made me aware of cystic fibrosis, to the point that I felt compelled, once I was gainfully employed, to begin contributing a few dimes a year to the CF Foundation. It's never been very much, but neither has the foundation ever returned an uncancelled check to me claiming it was too little to accept.Other parts of the story make strong impressions, such as her ability to act and mimic anything she saw on a TV or movie screen; she could have been an actress, or maybe a dancer, as she loved to twirl around with grace and energy, "imaginating" a world in which no one suffered pain or death or had to do therapy. The deep and serious discussions with people outside of her family circle regarding death, God and Heaven and her love of jokes and humor and silliness. Her obsession with beauty and jewelry, and the outrageous insensitivity with which she was treated several times by cold and heartless doctors. Fortunately, I can say that today, through my own experience with doctors and hospitals, the medical staff in the pediatric departments treat their young patients with great respect and compassion.We could wish that ALL types of childhood ailments were written about as beautifully. There are other illnesses and disabilities that are just as deadly. He states at one point that "some diseases, even some fatal ones, don't put too many demands on the family of the patient." I felt like that wasn't quite a fair statement. If a loved one has a disease, particularly a potentially fatal disease to one's child, the demands of just living day to day with the knowledge that you will never be able to take for granted your child's good health is a pretty difficult burden to carry, not to mention the 'round-the-clock effort devoted to simply making the child comfortable. I do hope that I'm mistaken in his meaning of that statement. I can't imagine he would truly intend to dismiss other fatal illnesses children suffer as being easier to deal with.But then really, this story isn't really about sick children. It's not even about cystic fibrosis; it is about Alex, and there is only ONE Alex Deford. I know that there is, as he says, no value in losing your child. You don't gain anything meaningful from it. But because the rest of us have had the good fortune to stumble onto his story of Alex, many, many thousands of others have found meaning in their own lives as a result of Alex's life, however brief it was. The CF Foundation has also benefited. So, thank you Alex, for living, and thank you, Frank Deford, for sharing your daughter with the rest of us.

Very good book. This is the life of Alex, a little girl who dies of cystic fibrosis at age 8. It talks about the disease, what it does to the child, & the family. How it gradually takes over a person's life until there is nothing left. Alex was very brave & wise beyond her years. The author lets you into those final moments of her life, how she faced them & what it is like to watch your child die. A real tear jerker - not for the faint of heart.

I read this book as a child and bought the ebook last year. Strangely, it's not the version I remember reading when I was younger. I think they updated it and that is the one I remember. This must be the original. A good book. Sad but touching.

I have not read any other books or articles by Frank Deford; however, my guess is that this is the most poignant story he has every told.As a frail baby, when Alex was diagnosed with CF, she was not expected to live more than 5 months, but she was a fighter who struggled to be as normal as possible, never using her disorder as an excuse for not participating. Many of her childhood friends were influenced by Alex and are practicing the field of healthcare. Over the years this book has been used in schools to educate children as young as 10 years old. Having never met her, other people inspired by this book or the movie, visit her grave site and have joined the plight seeking a cure for CF.According to my research, CF is primarily a disease that is much more prevalent with Caucasians and "over 90% of the affected infants now survive beyond one year."Studies show "the life expectancy of cystic fibrosis patients has been increasing over the past 40 years. Life expectancy of individuals with adequate pancreatic function can be more than 50 years."Alex lived, loved and set an example for the ages. She was a poster child for CF. She was an angel of a daughter. Her brother, Christopher was her idol. More than anything she wanted to live and be free of CF. She worried about the impact of her death upon her loved ones.She lives on in the hearts and minds of those who know her story. Alex would be 41 now, had she survived, yet she will forever be the brave little girl who lives in the pages of this unforgettable story told by her father in a manner that will squeeze your heartstrings and make your eyes moist and glisten with sadness, joy and awe.Celebrate and enjoy the life of an angel!

I rarely agree with the crowd, but, this once, I am on board with all the other reviewers:If I were looking for a story that was written to appease all the key points of interest to me, it would be difficult to find a literary work more on point than the latest novel by Michael Connelly. To be sure, it isnâ€™t perfect, but it is as near the ideal police procedural as I could ever hope to read.BLUSH FACTOR: This is not a story to share with children or your church prayer group. Street talk includes profanities (eff-words) and the affection of the two main heroes, although not overly graphic, will cause blushing if you read it to others. In fact, the description is tastefully done. This definitely is a crime story for mature audiences. Mature, but not obscene in any way, shape or form. PG-17, not R would be my thinking for a rating.THE WRITING & EDITING: If youâ€™re not turning away due to the blush factor, I believe youâ€™re going to appreciate the quality of writing and editing â€“ there is a reason the selling price is set as it is. Quality, big-name writers cost big bucks, and editors are well-paid to ensure the text is free of those persnickety typos, grammatical errors and misspellings, then, often, put back in to protect against copyright infringement.EXCERPTâ€˜â€¦led her out of the cell and back to the door to the Public Works yard.â€œYou looked at the book and the photos, right?â€ he said.â€œYes,â€ she said. â€œEverything that was digitized.â€They walked into the yard, which was a large open-air square surrounded by walls. Along the back wall there were four bays delineated by tool racks and workbenches where city equipment and vehicles were maintained and repaired. Bosch led Ballard into one of these.â€œYou saw the mark on the body?â€â€œThe A-S-P?â€â€œRight. But they got the meaning of it wrong. The original detectives. They went down a spiral with it and it was all wrong.â€He went to a workbench and reached up to a shelf where there was a large, translucent plastic tub with a blue snap-on top. He brought it down and held it out to her.â€œTwenty-five-gallon container,â€ Bosch said. â€œDaisy was five-two, a hundred and five pounds. Small. He put her in one of these, then put in the bleach as needed. He didnâ€™t use a bathtub.â€Ballard studied the container. Boschâ€™s explanation was plausible but not conclusive.â€œThatâ€™s a theory,â€ she said.â€œNo theory,â€ he said.He put the container down on the floor so he could unsnap the S-P reading horizontally and vertically in the center.â€œA-S-P,â€ he said. â€œAmerican Storage Products or American Soft Plastics. Same company, two names. The killer put her in one of these. He didnâ€™t need a bathtub or a motel. One of these and a van.â€Ballard reached into the container and ran a finger over the manufacturerâ€™s seal. Bosch knew she was drawing the same conclusion he had. The logo was stamped into the plastic on the underside of the tub, creating a ridged impression on the inside. Michael Connellyâ€™s Dark Sacred Night picks up where his two previous novels, The Late Show and Two Kinds of Truth, left off. RenÃ©e Ballard continues to work the late shift for Los Angeles Police Departmentâ€™s Hollywood Division. Harry Bosch continues to work cold cases for the San Fernando Police Department.They meet by happenstance when Ballard finds Bosch snooping through Hollywoodâ€™s case files in search of information about the murder of Daisy Clayton, whose mother, Elizabeth, Bosch rescued at the end of Two Kinds of Truth. They strike a bargain and investigate the case together. Along the way, Ballard and Bosch investigate other cases on the side, but itâ€™s the Daisy Clayton murder that drives the plot forward.As per usual with Connellyâ€™s novels, this one is a page-turner. I started reading it after dinner and finished it before I went to bed. It held my interest throughout. Even the side plots kept my interest. What I love about Connellyâ€™s novels is the way he moves the plot forward by means of good detective work, rather than an investigatorâ€™s flashes of insight. You see Ballard and Bosch working the evidence, piecing the story together bit by bit. This approach keeps you hooked, because you want to follow the evidence wherever it leads.Additionally, I love the fact that unlike other serial novelists that I love to readâ€”Iâ€™m looking at you, Lee Child and Craig Johnsonâ€”Michael Connelly is smart enough to realize that Bosch is getting older and simply canâ€™t sustain the pace, the intensity, or the beatings he endured (or gave out) in previous novels. With this novel, Connelly seems to be moving his focus toward Ballard and transitioning Bosch into a lesser role. Thatâ€™s great, as far as Iâ€™m concerned, both because Ballard is an intriguing character and because I still enjoy Bosch.Iâ€™m not giving Dark Sacred Night a five-star review, however. I thoroughly enjoyed it and recommend reading it, but itâ€™s not at the top of Connelly heap. I have two reasons for this: First, the side cases. One of the side cases is designed solely to introduce a character. Ballardâ€™s side cases (an accidental death, an art theft, and a gruesome murder) are solved too perfunctorily. Boschâ€™s main side case is more interesting, but itâ€™s difficult to tell whether how it ends is designed to set up a transition in Boschâ€™s life or to introduce a problem for a future novel. Second, a moment of intimacy between Bosch and another character seems way out of character for him. Youâ€™ll know what I mean when you read the novel.Despite this, Iâ€™m happy with Dark Sacred Night, and I look forward to whatever Connelly cooks up next year. My guess is that RenÃ©e Ballard will play the leading role and Harry Bosch a supporting one. And thatâ€™s okay with me. Theyâ€™re both great characters.

Over the years, I have derived a great deal of enjoyment from Michael Connollyâ€™s novels, and I always look forward to the arrival of a new one. I have read most of them more than once. When you reread a book, knowing the plot before you start, it is generally because you appreciate the writerâ€™s style as much as his stories.It is sad to have to report that this latest book is a disappointment. It reads very much like one of those continuation books, written by ghost writers, that come out after an author has died. The writing is flat and tedious, the story not particularly gripping, and the characters shallow. Either Connolly has lent his famous name to someone elseâ€™s inferior product, or he has completely lost interest in the terrific world that he created, and is just producing stories mechanically, to meet his contractual obligations. Such a shame.
