This book is very well written and, for me personally, it has helped me to finally understand why and how I felt after the death of my precious little daughter in 1963. She had a hole in her heart and the Dr. Norman Shumway at Stanford University Medical Center told us that if we got her to 2 years old, he would be able to do a surgery that would fix her heart and she would lead a normal life. But instead, she died at 13 months of age. She was the light of our life. My life froze in place. We went home from the hospital and I told my husband that we were not going to think about it. We would be like Scarlett Ohara and not think about it until tomorrow and tomorrow would just never come. the pain of her lost was unbearable so I chose to shut the emotions regarding it out of my life. I buried what had happened and continued on. One year later, on the anniversary of her death, I fell apart. I had a new three month old wonderful loving full of life little daughter that I needed to take care of, but half of the time, I was so horrible depressed that I could barely function. I hated to leave the house. If I did leave, I had panic attacks and merciless colitis attacks. In the back of my mind, I thought that it might be linked to her death because if I tried to talk about her at all, I would have another panic attack. It was a horrible year, but I finally got control of myself and continued on. But even now, over 50 years later and two wonderful devoted children, I still cannot talk about the loss of her. BUT if I had read this book, shortly after her death, I do believe that it would have helped me to understand that I had PTSD and to help me to start my acceptance of my loss, to deal with the pain, and to cope with the shock, and to recover.
To the person that complained that there were too many "I" references, all I can say is this: How can you expect someone to tell their story without the use of the word "I"?I found this book to be extremely well written and answered many of the questions that I have never broached with my son who suffers with PTSD. This book is the beginning of my journey into learning about PTSD and I'm so glad that I started with this book.My son wasn't an officer and he didn't fly a Cobra, but he is a Marine and I can see the parallels between him and the author. I'm so glad that the author has found some semblance of peace in his life and he's absolutely right that everyone suffering with PTSD has to find their own path. I can only hope that someday my son will find his. Until that time the one thing of many that I gained from reading this book will be easier for me to implement ... Patience. Thank you, Dan ... You've really helped me to find my path the start helping/understand my son.
As the father of an active duty Cobra pilot, this book was indispensable for gaining a greater understanding of what my son trains to do--and, in particular--how his fellow pilots may view his WTI (Weapons and Tactics Instructor) designation. I knew it was important, but my son is too private to say anything like what Sheehan did when he describes WTI's as the "Jedi's" of Cobra pilots. Kind of opened the eyes of this (already) proud dad.Thank you to Dan Sheehan, and his brothers in arms, for their service and their sacrifice. And thank you for putting your combat experience into a fascinating book. God bless.
I bought this book because the author's parents are good and old friends of my wife. My expectations were not high, as this is a first effort by a non-writer, and not even ghost written. However, I was blown away by the quality of the writing and the coherence of the book overall! I have no first hand military experience, but I thought I understood what the military experience, even in combat, is like from my reading. I didn't. Now I think I do. Knowing how many combat veterans come home and have terrible adjustment issues, PTSD, and even the extreme of suicide, I think this book has the potential to actually save lives on the home front. The author has proven himself courageous in battle, but he has gone a step further and proved to have unlimited personal courage in confronting his demons and being willing to go public with them in the hopes that it will help other veterans. After Action should not only be read by returning veterans, but by all civilians who really are willing to see what sacrifices military personnel make for all of us on every level.
Dan's ability to share this part of his journey has made a huge impact on our family. Our son-in-law was a Marine Cobra pilot who was killed two years ago. In the coming together of all of his "brothers" with his wife and family during the days and weeks after his death, we could feel their love, strength, dedication and vulnerability. Dan Sheehan's writing has opened up the deeper conversations among us of what the personal impact of their work has on each of them and their families.Due to reading "After Action", and to those conversations, came a realization that much has to be done to create avenues of support for the individuals who serve - and that we need to really think about the outcomes* before we deploy these human beings into situations that will forever change them. *Outcomes, meaning: What are the goals we are serving? What kind of long term positive difference in the human/geographic/political/economic arena will be made by deploying our military?
