If you want the cliff notes on what you'd learn in a UX graduate program, but don't have 3.5 years to spare for evening classes, you'll want to get this book. I've had to read a lot of UX books during grad school, and this is *the* UX book I recommend to other software engineers. The author's figure / ground example followed by the quote about how software engineers expect users to see what is actually on the screen should be taught in CS courses. Seriously, it is a perfect example on how perception is subjective. And I say this as a software engineer (CS / Math double major) who went back to school for a Masters degree in Human Factors (UX) to study how to make developer tools more usable (yes, it can be done). I wish I had been exposed to these topics back in my undergrad days, not only these UX principles, but more importantly, the *why* behind them (which I think makes this book so appealing to me as an engineer). I also recommend the book for your next flight. It's succinct and easy to read, which are important traits for a book explaining UX :)

I use this book in my HCI courses that I teach to undergraduates. It's clear, concise, and insightful. I think this speaks volumes about the book's accessibility to someone at any level of knowledge about the subject matter. I was looking at the time when I bought this book to find a better way to connect to designers on my team, this book definitely allowed me to do that. Not only was I able to do that, I was able to understand their terminology and thinking a lot better. Highly recommend to software engineers looking to connect with their designers better!

I read the 1st edition a few years back, and while I'm no psychologist, I felt like I better understood the rationale behind some common user interface guidelines. Guidelines can be quite useful, but hey, they're still just guidelines. I prefer understanding them, rather than just arbitrarily applying (or ignoring) them.In the 2nd edition of DWTMIM, content in previous chapters has been expanded and updated, and there are a couple of completely new chapters: decision making ("rarely rational") and hand-eye coordination (relevant to pointing and target selection). This edition also provides more visuals: updated examples of good and poor design, mobile design, and other illustrations. These help the reader grasp the relevant concepts, and make the book fresher and more interesting.If you haven't read the 1st edition yet, go for this 2nd edition.

The book is a nice summary of how software user interfaces should relate to human mental strengths and weaknesses. It is occasionally a little obvious, as though psychologists are needed to tell us what everyone already knows. Consider the quote: "'automatic' is how cognitive psychologists refer to routine well-learned behavior." Hmm.There is continual reference to evolution as being the explanation as to why the brain is the way it is. A theory that can be made to explain everything does not explain anything, and I found its inclusion to be distracting.Later in the book the author has a chapter on automatic (well-learned) and controlled tasks. The first we can do without thinking, like riding a bike. There are also mixtures of the two. He lumps problem solving and calculation in the same category. They both require the same limited mental resources. The author makes the point that a user interface should not make us "solve problems". Examples include figuring out where we are in some process, or what we need to do next. I found this all to be very well done.A later chapter addresses the problem of designing a system so that the user can efficiently go from problem solving to automatic use mode. It is based on the idea of a task: we learn best when the experience is task based. To do this we begin with task analysis. Part of this analysis seems quite similar to the application of use-cases and domain analysis in object-oriented design, and a reference could be useful.At the end of the book the author discusses the importance of responsiveness, and relates it to certain constants associated with mental activity, which I found quite interesting.As a stylistic note, the author switches back and forth between four different schemes for personal pronoun gender issues. This would seem to violate his own call for interface consistency.In general, I found it to be a very nice book and would recommend it to someone wanting a nice overview of computer systems user interface issues.

This is an exceptionally useful book, not just for designers of user interfaces but for designers and interested readers of all sorts. It provides not only clear guidance about what to do; it helps the reader to understand why certain approaches work as they do, and it does so with clear language, illustrative graphics, and intriguing examples. It is fascinating reading for anyone interested in how the human brain actually works, and if you are like me, you won't be able to put it down until you have read the whole thing.

I am working my way through the Rosato & Associates series. And, yes, that means I will read the books in order. I worked as a legal assistant for more than 25 years which is why I have a soft spot for this type of book. I really enjoyed this book. The writing was fast-paced, the characters are well-defined and the storyline is truly believable. There was never a dull moment and the ending was a surprise. Hang on to your seats!!!

I was looking for the DVD, "Illegal Tender," when I stumbled into Lisa Scottoline's book, "Legal Tender." So, I said, "Why not?" I purchased a copy and read it in two days! Yes, this book is 15 years old, but I am glad that I had a chance to read it!Benedetta Rosato: Attorney and Partner in a small, but productive firm, has a falling-out with her Partner (and former love interest). Somehow, he turns up dead - and Benedetta is on the hook for it! The adventure goes from there, and is this lady's investigative skills are put to the test! Honestly, how she was able to stay free and produce the evidence she needed to stay free, I'll never know. To say she was lucky would be an understatement! A good, entertaining, all-around crime story with some "snap" to it!If you are new to Scottoline's work (and I am), may I suggest "Legal Tender?"For you Amazoner's out there that may read this review, what do I read next from Lisa Scottoline? I can't choose. A little help, please...?I rate Lisa Scottoline's "Legal Tender"...four stars!

Bennie, has been on the run to collect evidence to clear her name. I don't understand why little was done by the police. Thank goodness athletic Bennie was able to save to stay free and get the truth out.

This was my first "Rosato" book but not sure if I will continue with the series. I've read other books by Lisa Scottoline and really enjoyed them, but just found this one too unbelievable. I'll probably try one more down the road, but for now will stick to "single"mysteries by Lisa.

I thought the novel started a bit slow, but then it quickly picked up the pace. Many turns and twists kept me on the edge as my seat as I readabout Bennie's nightmare. A truly spell binding novel.

I really like the way this lady writes. I never want the story to end.

Love this series! I read a lot of mysteries and this series is very well written. More like a novel than just a "mystery series". This book was shared with me by a friend and then I shared with mother-in-law who loved also. Highly recommend.

The sideline plot of her mother's illness tugs at one's heart strings as Bennie worries about her mother as she is on the run. The easy quick read may leave you wanting to read other books starring this same character.

I love Matthew Mead's work, and have been buying his "bookazines" since "Holiday" was released in 2010. His concepts are top notch, the photography and styling are impeccable, and overall I really enjoy MM. I also follow his blog and when I read last week that he had a new book out, I ordered it seconds later. Amazon shipped it and it arrived a few days before schedule.I'd give "Halloween with Matthew Mead" a 5-star rating if there were not two entire articles recycled, with no warning, from last year's Autumn book. It doesn't ruin the book for me at all, but was a bit disappointing. I know to expect this from magazine compendium books, which are nearly always repackaged "best of" selections, but really? Matthew Mead has 2 or 3 books a year--that's it (yes, he contributes elsewhere, but that is not the point!). I'll probably still buy his next book, but really hope it's ALL NEW.

I was looking for a Halloween "crafty" book that would give me clever ideas to try for the years to come. This was more of a "let me show off how good of a shopper I am and how I can turn that into a Halloween party that you could never recreate." To me, this was more of a book of birthday party ideas than a Halloween book. I was very disappointed for what I was expecting but I did glean one or two inspirations for ideas.

Matthew Mead is a self-titled style guru and judging from the impeccable photography throughout, I tend to agree. Every page drips with color and ambience - but most importantly, it really inspires you to put together your own ghastly spread for your friends and family. This year he focuses less on the how-to and recipes and more of the imagery. Essentially, it's more of a photobook and it is a must have. (The Marie Antoinette cookie spread was my absolute favorite!)

Thought there would be much more content in the book, more items, variations, etc. it really amounted to great lookin pictures for ideas, and a few tried for achieving the look.

This is one of the best Halloween publications I have seen. So many wonderful ideas for Halloween! I am looking forward to trying out some of the dishes in the book. Matthew Mead's photography is top notch, and each article is so inventive, and fresh! I highly recommend this issue to anyone who loves Halloween, and even those who like Halloween! The shipping at Amazon was speedy as well, I was expecting the issues to arrive on Tuesday and they arrived Friday. Great job as well! Thanks! Robert

I think the concepts for the business model might be good. But this book is so poorly designed I'm having a very hard time reading it. I'm a graphic designer, and my work includes book design, and I love an interestingly designed book. But fun design should always take a back seat to readability. I'm not sure why they felt the need to make the type so small, and so low contrast, and on glossy paper. The design choices are really interfering with readers getting full value out of the book.I only remember one book that I had trouble reading - a novel that had page after page of italic text. I'm not ready for large type books, but the design of this one is ridiculous.

The "Kindle" version of this book cannot be read on Kindle device or the browser-based Kindle Cloud Reader. It can only be read on a PC using the Kindle application. I recommend purchasing a printed version instead of the Kindle version.

It looks like a middle school art class decided to design a book. Tiny font with lots of big open spaces on every page. Some pages are white, some black, some blue. You have to read the table of contents to decipher the meaning. Why not just use a header? Different fonts that seem randomly placed. 4-color graphics that don't provide any information at all, just for decoration. There was some good information in this book, but it makes you work too hard to find it. Like trying to find pearls of wisdom in a cartoon. Thanks Amazon for your generous return policy. This one's going back.

Full of well thought diagrams that helps you develop a real modern business plan from scratch, or evaluate an ongoing business.I plan to use its content in my university classes next term, because the methodology developed in the book is concise and complete for the XXI century.I will also use its methodology in business, in order to evaluate, reevaluate and develop new business propositions.I recommend this reading to everyone interested in enterprises big or small. This manual takes a practical approach to block chain technology- how bitcoin and ethereum are used in the real world, how they work and the history of their creation. I became interested in learning about bitcoin when I heard about it becoming a valuable commodity in the gaming world and was impressed with what I found in this series. Even though I don't plan to actually write the software, it was helpful in showing me the relationship between the applications, the structure of the blockchain ecosystems and their value as currency.At the end there are several links that hook you up with more on the subject, where to find your "bitcoin wallet," where to get some and where to spend it. Five stars for a very informative and easy to follow guide.

4.5- This is a interesting selection of books in this package. I have been hearing about bitcoin and blockchain but not really having any idea about it at all. These books started me on the road to understanding what the currency was about. The more we become entrenched in the online world the more knowledge will need to be known about online currency. This book did explain many questions on the Bitcoin, even though this is a great read into understanding the mining operation. I feel itâ€™s a 50-50 chance of catastrophic failure. On the hand, I do know there are over a hundred companies that take this type of payment. I would say this book is a cracking beginning to understanding the pros and cons of investing to mine these types of coins. This is my first book on reading about Bitcoins, therefore I highly recommend this book, as it explains various facts to consider, well worth the read.

Alright, so Iâ€™ve been hearing the word block chain for a while now and had no idea what it actually meant. After hearing a presentation in a grad school class one night, I finally decided to look into it. I started with this book and it was perfect. Easy to follow language with a great history of block chain. If you are curious what block chain is, this is a great place to start.

I have read them all. There are many technical terms like quantum computing that I thought were not important until I finish them reading. Everything was explained in a nutshell so I get the idea before I move on a different topic. The books tackle the past, present and the future of blockchain, Bitcoin and Ethereum. Something that is worth reading if you want to be successful.

This book has 4 basic cupcake recipes and 6 recipes for icing.The rest of the book uses these recipes as ingredients - for example Turtle Topped Cupcakes require yellow cupcakes, buttercream frosting, and store bought candy. I'd estimate 75% of the book is combining the first 10 recipes with different store bought candy or food coloring. Every recipe has a "tip" that tells you to how to use a cake mix instead of baking from scratch.There ARE some nice variations (Butternut Squash Cupcakes, Aztec Chocolate, and Spiced Caramel Pear) but overall this book is written to sell cake mix and it's little too obvious about it.

The one recipe I've tried so far (candy bar cupcakes) was extremely easy. The most complicated things I had to do was separate eggs and test for doneness with a toothpick.Some of the recipes use the basic cupcake / frosting recipe and then add other ingredients to make them different & original.I would definitely recommend this cookbook for anyone who likes to bake but is tired of the same old boring recipes.*******Update 11.01.11 - I've been making cupcakes about twice a month now since I've purchased this book and get rave reviews for each new recipe. The added ingredients definitely change the flavors and the decorating (so far) is a snap.I would recommend if you're going to start making cupcakes more often that you buy a few accessories to make putting the batter into the pan and frosting easier. I've purchased a simple decorating bag with two different large tips - with this I can frost 24 cupcakes in minutes and they look professional. I also love the 'batter scoops' I've purchased. It helps ensure that my cupcakes are of a consistent size - which again makes them look prettier in the end.

This book is excellent for anyone that likes to make cupcakes! There are cupcakes for any occasion and cupcakes for all of the major & minor holidays. Most cupcakes use ingredients that you usually have in the house anyway. There are sections on how to bake good cupcakes, how to frost cupcakes & how to store/tote cupcakes. Then, you have basic recipes for cupcakes and frosting, kids' party cupcakes, holiday cupcakes & special occasion cupcakes. This book is a must-have for cupcakes!

I love this book! I checked it out of the library and then used so many recipes from it I decided I had to have my own copy. I like how many of the recipes are "from scratch" recipes, and then there is a cake mix version for quicker turnaround or for those who don't feel as comfortable in the kitchen baking from scratch. The section on holiday cupcakes is especially fun.

It's a beautiful book with great decorating ideas but the basic yellow and chocolate cake recipes in the front were disappointing as far as flavor and texture, especially the yellow. I usually use box cakes and wished I had done so for our Thanksgiving dinner. I may try again and double the vanilla and butter but WON'T take to a family event to share without a taste test ;/

Of all the cupcake books I've seen or bought, I prefer this one to the rest. They put the basic cake recipes and the frostings in the front (plus a few other recipes throughpout the book) and even show you how to apply cake mix instead. Then it shows you how to apply the recipes in so many decorative, imaginative ways for holidays, birthdays or just for fun. Truly great ideas, my friends and I found ourselves oohing and aaahing at all the great cupcake designs the book displays. I've tabbed several I MUST make as soon as I can and have done a few already to rave reviews. Not so difficult but just the "Why didnt I think of that?" sort. Buy it, you won't be sorry.

Linda Hogan is one of our country's best and most important writers. Her personal and spiritual dedication to the natural world is inspiring. The poetry is selected from her many earlier books along new work this Lind Hogan fan will love and read many times. Her language is crisp and uncluttered, making her thoughts and images accessible to all readers. Some of the poems, such as "The History of Red," and "Maps" (among others), I read over and over marveling each time.

hoganâ€™s work is complex and full of metaphors, nature, politics, language, emotions and human soul. this is a must read when you need to lose yourself in something deeper. itâ€™s not an easy or simple read, you have to be present and attentive- but, itâ€™s so worth it!

Read a very brief exerpt from one of her poems in Craig Childs' Atlas of a Lost World, and looked her up. So glad I did. This is a whole new world of beautiful poetry

I was delighted when I received my copy of Dark, Sweet to find that it was so thick. Full of rich poems from Linda. I devour it like chocolate. I love the way she describes nature. My favorite poem is Carry...if you like Linda's writing or you love nature you must get this book.
