Ana Castillo is a devotee of Guadalupe, and a beloved Latina author and curandera! She writes in Spanish and English, which I personally find charming. Haters who say "Speak English only" should check their bigotry at the door and find their hearts! Muchas gracias, querida Ana!

I have never connected with a collection of poetry so immediately and fully as I have with "My Father was a Toltec." I have wanted to love poetry my whole life, but I failed to find a poet that really reached me. That ended when I found Ana Castillo. Her poetry is powerful, precise, angry and emotional, totally vulnerable, and unspoiled by conventional training. She tells the story of everything it is to be a woman. All the women I have shown this collection to have loved it as intensely as I do.

Most of the poems are in English and they are wonderful. Ana Castillo shares her heritage as only poetry, which canevoke emotions of all kinds. I wish the Spanish ones were translated.

The book arrived in great conditions. It's better than I expected!

Call them what you will, street poetry, poems from the hood,or beauty personified, Ana Castillo's work speaks to all themature themes of the American experience during the past halfcentury or so --- racism, sexism, ethnic pride and ethnic struggle. With such an ethnocentric title as "my Father was a Toltec,"it is no wonder that Castillo harbors a contradictory image ofgangster father: on the one hand, proud of her Mexican heritageand that her father hailed from such a great civilization, on theother, having no illusions as to who he really was, a member of theToltec gang of Chicago's West Side and all that goes with it. Thesepoems are important for two reasons: one, they give us a glimpse intothe Latino culture in America and the struggle they and she endured, but two, it forces us to confront the very differences that drivepeople and races apart. While the image of her father is abit steeped in stereotypical themes of the lazy, mambo-dancing,womanizing, fedora-donning, silk-suit-and-tie-wearing Chicano, wemust conclude by saying 'if the shoe fits, wear it.' The themesin this collection are strong in flavor and not for the the faintof heart which is why I will have trouble with sleep tonight. These poems titillate, teach, but most importantly, touch us withtheir humanity.

I was first introduced to Ana Castillo, when I read her marvelous novel, "So Far From God" ("Tan Lejos de Dios"), which was a journey through magical realism, Chicana identity and the experience of people who have lived and cultivated the land as far back as ten generations. This was a true example of the indigenous experience in the United States. Totally beautiful and powerful......"My Father Was a Toltec" doesn't fail to disappoint. This collection of poems looks at the Chicana/indigenous Mexican/female experience in the United States, and in Mexican culture. Ana writes in English, Spanish, Spanglish and sprinkles it with words in Toltec (the culture of her father). Castillo, an avid writer and practicioner of santeria (a mixture of the Catholic and indigenous ritualistic beliefs), truly has a connection to this duel (even triple) identity. Castillo grew up in a Mexican neighborhood, in the South side of Chicago, and finally took a trip with her mother to their native Mexico, when she was older (this is captured in her poetry).I definitely reccomend this book. Ana Castillo is an auther more readers should know about!! This is such an important example of Latina literature. Those from the culture will identify with her, and those non-Latinos and non-Spanish speakers will definitely receive an education.

Leap of Faith: Memoirs of an Unexpected Life

From Publishers Weekly

Anyone who loved The King and I will readily warm to the love story of Queen Noor and the late King Hussein of Jordan. Born in America in 1951 as Lisa Halaby, Noor came from a wealthy, well-connected family and was part of Princeton's first co-ed class. Her father's aviation business produced a chance meeting with King Hussein in 1976, and a year or two later Noor realized the king was courting her. He was 41, she was 26. The rumor mills buzzed: was she the next Grace Kelly? Before long, the king renamed her Noor (light in Arabic), and she converted to Islam. They were married in the summer of 1978. From this point on, her story is mostly his, mainly covering his attempts to broker peace in the Middle East. There are meetings with Arafat, Saddam Hussein, American presidents and other leaders. Noor details Hussein's struggles to create Arab unity and his vision of peaceful coexistence with Israel. Her own activities developing village-based economic self-sufficiency projects and improving Jordan's medical, educational and cultural facilities take second place to her husband's struggles on the world stage. And while she occasionally acknowledges her domestic difficulties, Noor is careful not to allow personal problems to become any more than asides. Her pleasing memoir ends with the king's death after his struggle with cancer, although readers may suspect that this smart, courageous woman will remain a world presence for years to come.Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist

The word unexpected in the book's subtitle refers to the fact that this American-born, Princeton-educated woman was in the beginning stages of a career in urban planning when, rather suddenly, she married the much older and thrice-married king of Jordan. Queen Noor offers a vastly informative and even fascinating memoir of her life from her childhood in an Arab American family, daughter of a very successful man in politics and business (including a stint as director of the Federal Aviation Administration), to her tenure as consort of the charismatic King Hussein, who died in 1999 of cancer. Her Majesty naturally adopts a Jordanian perspective in her reminiscences; we are not surprised when she posits, for instance, that "Jews, Muslims, and Christians had lived peacefully in the Middle East and indeed in Palestine for centuries. It was not until the rise of Zionism and the creation of Israel that animosities took root." As the woman who stood behind one of the major players in the Middle East in the second half of the twentieth century, Queen Noor brings a unique perspective to the contemporary history of the region. With this book's release, the articulate, engaging and photogenic author will undoubtedly be on the talk-show circuit, so librarians should be prepared for demand. One of the best books I’ve ever read. I’m half Jordanian and I grew up hearing the songs dedicated to King Hussein and dancing to them. I remember seeing her on Larry king live when I was in 9. This book was very sentimental to me. I nearly cried when I read his mentioning of her in his last letter. She also shed gave me thorough understanding of the palistinian Israeli conflict. I nearly cried at the end when I finished the book. Worth the read for sure and I’ll always keep the book.❤️❤️❤️

Wish everyone would read Queen Noor's book. So much of what we have been told even by own government has been untrue, and harmful to Jordan, and undeserving for all that King Hussein did and tried to do to avoid the Iraq war. My eyes were opened and I admire her for her strength, perseverance, and power as a good human being.

This book is definitely a very good read. Of course it's a love story, a bit of a privileged life, and often quite serious, BUT it makes clear the issues in the Middle East. So important to understand. Of all the books I've read, and there are many, this one fits in the "Important" category. It should be a best seller. I highly recommend it.

I am always asking, "what did the author edit?" She wants her husband and her adopted country to look the best in this book. Since the book has ended, she spends most of her time in England.....Times and politics change, so Queen Noor is not in favor as she was once. The memoirs were well written, but a timeline of events and a map would have helped me understand the region and the events of which she was writing.

I bought this book as part of my quest to learn more about Jordan after a recent visit there but only read it after my second visit to that country.I had already read Avi Shlaim's Lion of Jordan (Lion of Jordan: The Life of King Hussein in War and Peace (Vintage)) and King Abdullah II's book (Our Last Best Chance: The Pursuit of Peace in a Time of Peril), so was not looking for an historical account, but for something more personal. Queen Noor's book is certainly a personal account, with enough historical context. Her love for her husband and her adopted country are both obvious and her writing gives some personal insights while maintaining the privacy of the royal family of Jordan and that of her own family. It is an easy book to read and will provide another perspective from which to view Arabs, Muslims and the Middle East - something which is greatly needed.

Somewhat of a misnomer. Only a few pages are about the Queen. Most of it is a hagiography of King Hussein. If pitched as such, I'd buy a lot more.

Queen Noor is inspiring. The book (because it is so interesting) leaves the reader wanting to know more about her, the Royal family, Jordan, and the Middle East. However, Queen Noor is easily the most fascinating figure in this story and I'm so glad she wrote her story now, not later as she contemplated. After reading the entire book, the only criticism I had was that she compared the American GOVERNMENT'S views with European CITIZENS' views (concluding that Americans are more narrow minded about the situation with Israel). My reaction was that she should compare governments with governments and people with people. Although our government is pro-Israel to an extreme, I think most of the general citizens believe our government should be neutral (just as the European citizens believe). However, we never have any political candidates who stand on that platform. Anyway, I'm sure it was an unintentional mis-comparison and though it struck a nerve, this was a good read. The reviewers who say she does not open up enough (in my view) miss the point of her reserved character, the Muslim honor and privacy belief system, and Noor's dignity. For goodness sake, she even said she almost never held hands with her husband in public. Why would she disgrace her family honor now by publishing a tell-all book? Instead, she showed her intelligence, but also her respect for her husband, family, and country. I agree her politics are slanted to her view (and to her country's view) but face it, it's her book.

I found Truth in this book that was never shared about King Hussein and the efforts to lead to lasting peace in that region. Things shared in this book were kept from us by the US Govt. and the US News reports about the Israeli aggression and blocking a lasting peace with the behind the scenes collaborations between the US and Israel. King Hussein was a man much like Ghandi and other modern day saints. His efforts for peace were always obstructed by Israels refusal to completely return to only the land given them in the 1948 aggreement establishing the nation of Israel which was done unfairly for the Palestinians. We only have our US Govt. and the Israeli Govt. for the hatred of the Jews and the rise of terrorism in the world. All they wanted was an equal distribution of the land and the Palestinians right to independence as a nation. You can easily deduct this from reading this book for yourself. Before WWI the US kept out of world politics. Since then our involement has created many Problems for us at home and abroad, a huge war machine and many of our men and women dying for what?We have plenty of injustices in our own country to resolve instead of undermining stituations elsewhere in the world! Queen Noor, thank you for writing your account of your husbands peace efforts!

Against Obligation: The Multiple Sources of Authority in a Liberal Democracy

Review

In Against Obligation, Abner Greene upends conventional wisdom about several fundamental political questions. Why and when must people obey the law? What does religious freedom require in a liberal democratic state? Must judges and citizens respect historical views about constitutional meaning? Smart, ambitious, provocative, and original―this tightly argued and broad-ranging book compels readers to reexamine basic assumptions about political obligation, constitutional democracy, and religious freedom. (Christopher Eisgruber, Princeton University)Against Obligation is one of the finest contributions to constitutional theory in recent years. Abner Greene shows the connections between questions of political and interpretive obligation in this remarkably incisive work. His arguments against the leading justifications of political and interpretive obligation are vigorous and fair. And his arguments for the multiple sources of obligation and interpretive authority in a liberal democracy are creative, normatively attractive, and deeply grounded in a powerful account of our constitutional order. (James E. Fleming, Boston University)

Despite its title, this book isn't some sort of anarchist tract. Abner Greene (AG) is arguing against some very specific obligations, namely (i) an obligation always to obey the law, regardless of its content, (ii) an obligation always to respect the past in the juristic sense, including respecting the "original meaning" of the Constitution and respecting judicial precedent, and (iii) an obligation always to respect the US Supreme Court's interpretations of the Constitution. (Philosophers give the name "political obligation" to obligations like (i), and AG gives the name "interpretive obligation" to (ii) and (iii).) Even if we take these only as prima facie obligations, i.e. being subject to override in particular circumstances, AG argues that they don't exist. I've recently posted a lengthy review of this book on a law blog called Concurring Opinions, so here I'll just mention a few main points.I thought the most successful part of the book was Chapter 4, dealing with (iii). AG lays out the circumstances in which public officials -- including the President, Congress, lower court Federal judges, and even state and local officials -- ought to feel comfortable about acting on their own interpretations of the Constitution, even if the Supreme Court has said that it means something else. Many of its arguments were new to me. Chapter 3, about why even the Supreme Court shouldn't get hung up on originalism or even on following its own precedent (issue (ii)) was also quite good for an American audience, though I don't expect a majority of the Justices will follow AG's advice anytime soon. Note that AG doesn't argue that precedent should always be ignored: rather, he argues that it should be merely one influence among others on a judicial opinion. Similarly, in the context of (iii), the Supreme Court's interpretations might raise good points that public officials should consider; the point is that they don't have a duty always to follow those interpretations just because they emanated from the Court.Political obligation has been controversial for a long time, and while AG isn't the first to deny its existence, his Chapter 1 provides a very densely-argued rebuttal to the best-known theories by British and American writers. This chapter is written at a relatively high level of abstraction, and (along with the Introduction) may be tough going for some readers. Chapter 2 provides a sort of affirmative argument for why the State should recognize that its jurisdiction is "permeable -- full of holes." On this basis, the State should sometimes grant exemptions to, e.g., religious groups so that they can live "by themselves," as long as they "abide by constitutional rules." I thought this chapter was quite problematic, for reasons discussed in depth in the Concurring Opinions review.Just as the title might mislead you about the scope of book's arguments, so might the subtitle: "The Multiple Sources of Authority in a Liberal Democracy". The book's arguments are really focused on the US case only, not on liberal democracies generally, or else will be most persuasive to scholars who share certain American philosophical tastes. For example, the UK is a liberal democracy, but lacks judicial review of Parliamentary legislation, so all or most of Chapter 4 wouldn't apply. France and Germany are liberal democracies, but don't regard judicial precedent as binding in the way we do in the US. A reader familiar with a civil law system like those countries' will wonder what's the big deal about most of Chapter 3. AG's discussion in Chapter 1 assumes away much of the problematic of political obligation by explicitly assuming that law and morality are distinct; some Continental thinkers devote much more analysis to this problem, even if they share AG's skepticism about political obligation. And Chapter 2 is based almost entirely on the religion clauses of the First Amendment -- though ironically, German constitutional jurisprudence sometimes reaches similar results to those urged by AG, and might have made his argument more persuasive. Unfortunately, AG doesn't refer to any Continental sources since the 18th Century, and doesn't refer to any non-US court cases at all. To be fair: AG does at times make it clear that he's speaking only about the US case, especially in later chapters; and as for those portions of his argument where he speaks in a confusingly general or universal tone, he's in plentiful company. Many Anglophone legal philosophers, including Ronald Dworkin, are very unclear about the geographical scope of their comments, which often apply to the US (or at most, common law jurisdictions) alone.AG's style is dense and serious, but free from the critical studies jargon and vagueness currently fashionable in some parts of the legal academy. I was cheered to see that the book has both endnotes and a full bibliography. A book to contend with if you're interested in the philosophy of American constitutionalism, but perhaps less useful if your interests are more in comparative law or politics, or in political or legal philosophy more broadly.
