As a late millennial homosexual (30 yrs old now) I found this book both captivating and incredibly easy to identify with.1) The story really paralleled the plight of old buildings and the sensation of being a homosexual who came to age before the LGBT rights of the 2015, with being a new building and younger member of a gay community.2) The characters were so easily to identify that I swear I've dated a guy identical to Curt before.
But everything gets better. Writing, plot, characters. The plot is pretty cliche for a gay novel, but the execution is such that no enjoyment is lost in the recurrence of overused tropes.
In a lot of ways, since both works share the same setting and roughly the same time period, this novel struck me as a male-orientated version of Highsmith's The Price of Salt. I enjoyed Pennsylvania Station more. It examines complex issues such as age differences in relationships, but I thought what elevated it was how well the author wrote through the perspective of the main character, an architect. There's a cool parallelism between people and buildings running throughout the novel, which allows for a neat metaphor to develop about changing cultures and the tension between the past and present. In addition to The Price of Salt, I'd consider pairing this book with Edith Wharton's The Age of Innocence, which also hits on very similar themes in the same setting.
In his second novel, author Horrigan deftly covers an infrequently fictionalized time, pre-Stonewall New York, the growing gay activist community, and older reluctant and closeted gay men in the 1960s. Adding the architectural preservation concerns of protagonist Frederick Bailey's colleagues places it in a crucial moment in urban history. The beautiful Penn Station is set to be demolished, and Frederick is drawn into his friends' hopes to save it. He also endures a violent attack by a man he brings home. Meeting the young, fickle yet passionate Curt forces him to adjust to a new life and a new generation. The era of discreet cruising and closeted life erodes as a new life forces itself upon him; a fascinating read.
In this beautifully architected story of preservation, demolition, and reconstruction, Frederick Bailey asks what’s worth fighting for. A brilliantly written portrait of 1960s New York. As a reader, I fell for the drama between characters; as a writing professor, I marveled at the genius execution of craft. A book I’ll return to, and teach from, again and again.
Horrigan has a unique way of whisking me away to a time and space that no longer exists, although I feel like I'm there. His descriptions of both physical surroundings and human emotion are hypnotising, raw and real. My personal gage of an excellent book is mourning the characters after the last page. I read this book months ago and I still wonder where they are and what they are doing....... I highly recommend this read!
The way Patrick Horrigan captured the personality of the people was almost painful it was done so well. He takes you back to a time (and I so hope we don't return there) and place and introduces you to a period that should not be forgotten. Lucky today for the current generations of Men and the Landmarks that don't have to live a in a closet or be destroyed without at least consideration.
A remarkable historical novel about life in New York City in the 1960s. Horrigan is an excellent storyteller. A much recommended book.
