I'm too old and ornery to gladhand anyone, so the following review is as unbiased as possible.]This Dark Chest of Wonders: 40 Years of Stephen King’s The Stand could have been another dry look at a popular property, filled with information but as entertaining as a pile of wet leaves. Happily, that is not the case. This Dark Chest of Wonders is a delightful read, close to being breezy, which is not a word one often uses when talking about the end of the world.Dealing with the different iterations of the ever-popular Stephen King book, This Dark Chest of Wonders starts at the very beginning. Archival material culled from old interviews with King reveal the genesis of the tale. You’ll learn about the poem that led to the short story that eventually became the gargantuan tome that became one of King’s most enduring tales. Then, the unabridged version of The Stand was released, making a large book even bigger. The original version isn’t even available anymore.A majority of This Dark Chest of Wonders consists of new conversations with those involved in telling King’s tale to different audiences. The Mick Garris section is particularly interesting. The director of the television mini-series is full of anecdotes about both the filming of the show and King himself. His experiences in Las Vegas would make an interesting book by themselves.The interviewees all come across as people pleased to tell their stories, but it’s the interviewer who makes them shine. It is the enthusiasm and ebullience shown for The Stand by author Andy Burns that makes This Dark Chest of Wonders an enjoyable read. [Disclosure: Andy Burns is the founder and editor-in-chief of Biff Bam Pop!] His questions are incisive, but phrased in such a way that his subjects feel free to go far beyond the scope of the queries. This is a subject Burns knows well, and that seemingly effortless knowledge shines through.Even though plenty of what Burns knows is on display here, there doesn’t seem to be enough of what he thinks. His writing style is conversational and engaging. One almost wishes they could grab a few beers with Burns and talk about things for an evening. While that attitude comes through during the interviews, it’s a shame that we don’t learn more about the author’s personal feelings and experiences with The Stand. While it is enlightening to read about The Stand, it’s a lot more fun when Burns uses his conversational tone to speak to the reader directly.The thing that plagues This Dark Chest of Wonders is the lack of involvement from King himself. An interview between Burns and King would have been the deal sealer here. Instead, we have snippets of things King has said in the past. There’s nothing inherently wrong with that, and it’s always good to hear where King’s head was at a particularly moment of writing. However, some of King’s quotes might be repeats for long time Constant Readers. Besides, we’re forty years on from the original publication of The Stand, and it would have been good to hear from the man himself about the story’s legacy.What we do get, though, is a ton of insider information. From the book itself to the mini-series, and on to the comic, the audiobook, and even the adaptations that never saw the light of day, This Dark Chest of Wonders covers every apocalyptic angle. Through all of it, Burns acts as our merry conductor, guiding us through the mess of twists and turns the story has taken. Because of the total mass of information in this book, it might be best to read it in sections instead of inhaling it all in one sitting. Nonetheless, This Dark Chest of Wonders is an important book for King fans and scholars, jammed with facts, anecdotes, and a sense of fun as infectious as Captain Trips itself.
