From School Library Journal

Gr 7 Up—It may come as no surprise that our canine companions descended from wolves, but this title describes a coevolution and cooperation with humans that may have begun much earlier than scientists once estimated. The 1994 discovery and carbon dating of tracks of a wolflike dog and a boy in France's Chauvet Cave reveal that humans and dog companions walked together 26,000 years ago. This is an unfolding story, leading readers through the basics of evolutionary science and how findings lead to anthropological theories. The variations in breeds today are explained in terms of artificial vs. natural selection. American paleoanthropologist Pat Shipman suggests that wolves may have helped modern human ancestors survive the Paleolithic era, when Neanderthals could not, by teaching humans how to delegate pack responsibilities of protection, scouting, and babysitting. In turn, wolves learned to follow a human's gaze. The investigative puzzle emphasizes the importance of asking questions and collaborating with scientists from other fields to come up with answers. Color-blocked pages offer explanations of scientific processes, profile field-related tools, and relay asides about canine fanciers and 9/11 rescue dogs. The latter part of the book focuses on the intelligence, personality, and trainability of dogs and on current research on a shared community of disease-preventing microbes that shine a positive light on "sloppy dog kisses." VERDICT This is narrative nonfiction at its best—high interest and engaging, with meaty interdisciplinary science exploration. A top choice for tweens and teens.—Vicki Reutter, State University of New York at Cortland

Other than the frequent reiterations of a few basic points, you can't really tell it's for younger readers -- after the book progresses beyond fairly simple, straightforward intoductary chapters outlining the issues and areas of research, it becomes increasingly complex and sophisticated enough to hold an intelligent adult's interest. It seems up to date, well-researched and documented, and if you love dogs, you'll be fascinated by how they have potentially shaped our species over time, and a bit more respectful!

A really fun book to read, especially, if you're like Will Rogers, who said "If dogs don't go to heaven when they die, then when I die, I want to go where they go." It explains a lot about why we have dogs, and how both species have benefited from the relationship. (But I still think we got the best end of the deal!) If you love dogs, or have ever been owned by a dog, you'll enjoy this book.

Book arrived in great shape an it is a good exchange between me and the seller...seller was careful to pack it so that it was not damaged and got it to me before the deadline. Book is a great one if you love dogs and wonder just how much they have contributed to the human experience.Great!

After reading this book I have found that the majority of my instincts abt my furry friends are well founded. This book is well researched and extremely informative. Well worth reading. Dogs + Humans=great. Cats + Humans =?????

Very interesting book. I had heard some of the research, but not all and am so glad human egos aren't so fragile that they are beginning to accept other creatures think, feel and reason in their own way also.

I found this book quite descriptive and informational, but the same concept was repeated throughout the book and got very boring at times. The overall flow of the book wasn’t that great as it was choppy and long at points. Considering this if you are looking for a interesting book to read this would be great though!

Started off slow, the author appeared to need more pages to fill. About halfway through it got more interesting, and I started learning new things.

Interesting summary of the coevolution of mankind and dogs, including how each species have influenced the other. Well written and researched and very fascinating.
